  • Jeep Grand Cherokee

How the car finds a leak in a system you cannot see

Gasoline evaporates, and evaporated gasoline is a regulated pollutant. So every vehicle sold in the US since the mid-1990s has a sealed system that captures fuel vapor in a charcoal canister and later feeds it into the engine to be burned. It has to be sealed to work, and federal regulation requires the car to test its own seal periodically.

The test works one of two ways depending on the manufacturer. Vacuum-based systems close the vent valve, open the purge valve to let engine vacuum pull the system down, then close everything and watch whether the vacuum holds. Pressure-based systems use a small pump to push the system slightly above atmospheric and watch for decay. Either way, the rate of decay tells the computer roughly how big the hole is — and the size determines which code you get.

Why clearing the code before an emissions test guarantees a fail

The advice circulates every inspection season: clear the code, drive straight to the station, get the sticker. It does not work, and it has not worked since OBD-II inspections replaced tailpipe-only testing. The inspection reads two things from the computer, not one.

  • Stored and pending codes — any emissions-related code with the light on is an immediate fail.
  • Readiness monitors — a set of self-tests the computer runs for the catalyst, EVAP, oxygen sensors, EGR and others. Each reports ready or not ready.
