Overview
The 2019 F-150 sits near the end of the thirteenth generation — the aluminum-bodied truck that arrived for 2015 and was heavily updated for 2018. It has an aluminum cab and bed on a steel frame, which is why these trucks resist the bed rot that kills older steel pickups, and why a collision repair costs more than you expect.
For 2019 Ford made the 10-speed automatic standard across every engine except the base 3.3L, added trailer reverse guidance and a lane-keeping system on higher trims, and expanded availability of the 3.0L Power Stroke diesel. The 5.0L V8 and 3.5L EcoBoost carry the 2018 updates: direct plus port injection on the 5.0, a new dual-injection setup on the 3.5, and start-stop across the range.

Reliability & running costs
Structurally excellent and mechanically mixed. The frame, aluminum body and axles hold up to genuine work, and plenty of these trucks pass 200,000 miles. But two of the most-reported issues on this generation — 10-speed transmission shift quality and cam phaser rattle on the 5.0L V8 — are both expensive if they need hardware rather than software, and that keeps the score honest at three. Running costs are also simply higher than a sedan: bigger tires, bigger brakes, more fuel.

Thirteenth-generation F-150s have been subject to a number of safety recalls covering different build date ranges, and a truck built in one month may have open campaigns that an otherwise identical truck does not. On the 3.5L and 2.7L EcoBoost, a single-cylinder misfire usually means the coil-on-plug boot has failed or the plug gap has opened past spec — turbocharged cylinder pressure is far less forgiving of a worn plug than a naturally aspirated engine, which is why EcoBoost plugs are a 60,000-mile item rather than 100,000. On the 5.0L V8, a random misfire alongside a cold-start rattle points at cam phaser wear affecting valve timing rather than ignition. Check whether the misfire is worst in the first minute after a cold start — that pattern is the phaser signature. Read the P0300 guide.
