  1. Read the battery date code

    Look for a sticker or stamped code on the top or side of the case — typically a letter for month and a digit for year, so 'C4' means March 2024. Voltmeter readings and what they mean
  • Jump start test. If a jump start gets the car running and it keeps running after the cables come off, the alternator is probably fine and the battery is the suspect. If it stalls shortly after disconnecting, the alternator is not producing.
  • Headlights at idle. Lights that visibly brighten when you rev the engine indicate the alternator is struggling to keep up at low rpm.

Most people blame winter, because winter is when the battery finally fails to start the car. The damage was done the previous summer.
