  • Toyota Camry

    Later Camrys integrate the leak-detection pump into the canister assembly. When any part of it leaks internally, the repair is the complete assembly rather than a hose, which pushes the bill toward the top of the range and surprises owners expecting a gas cap answer.

  • Nissan Altima

    The purge volume control valve on Nissan four-cylinders is a known offender: carbon migrating from the canister keeps the valve seat from closing completely. It passes an electrical resistance test and clicks on command, so it is routinely cleared by mistake before a pressure test finds it.

Owners routinely report that the light goes out on its own, stays off for two weeks, then returns. Nothing has been fixed and nothing has broken again. The leak was there the whole time — the test simply did not run, or ran under conditions where the leak did not show.

  • The monitor only runs under specific enabling conditions, typically a cold start after several hours parked, a fuel level between roughly 15% and 85%, and ambient temperature within a defined band.
  • The light needs consecutive failures to illuminate and consecutive passes to extinguish, so a borderline leak produces a light that flickers in and out over weeks.
  • Temperature changes the leak rate. A hairline crack in plastic opens on a cold morning and closes in July, which is why these codes cluster seasonally.

The step people skip is the smoke test, on the reasoning that $120 for a diagnosis feels like money not spent on the fix. On this code it is the opposite: a vent valve, a purge valve and a canister bought in sequence total more than the test and still may not include the failed part.

Frequently asked questions

Will P0442 fail my emissions inspection?
Yes. It is an emissions-related code and the check engine light is on, which is an automatic fail in every OBD-II testing state. The fact that the car runs perfectly makes no difference — the inspection reads the computer, not the tailpipe, on modern vehicles.
Can I just ignore a P0442?
Nothing is being damaged and you will not be stranded, so mechanically you can. The two real costs are your inspection and the loss of the check engine light as a warning device — with it already lit for a pinhole vapor leak, it cannot tell you about a misfire or an overheating problem later.
I replaced the gas cap and the light is still on. Why?
Either the cap was not the leak, or the monitor has not re-run yet. If you did not clear the code, the computer needs to pass the EVAP test two or three consecutive times before it turns the light off, which can take two to five days of driving with the tank between a quarter and three quarters full. Give it that long before concluding anything.
Is a cheap universal gas cap good enough?
Often not, on this specific code. A universal cap will keep fuel in and dirt out, but the small-leak test is measuring a 0.040-inch equivalent opening, and generic caps frequently do not seal that tightly against a particular filler neck. The OEM cap is typically $15–$25 more and removes the doubt.
Does a small EVAP leak waste gas?
Not in any amount you would ever see at the pump. The vapor escaping through a pinhole is a fraction of a gallon a year. The code exists for air quality reasons, not economy ones, so if someone tells you fixing it will pay for itself in fuel savings, it will not.
