How Often Should You Change Your Oil?

Most modern engines specified for full synthetic go 7,500–10,000 miles between changes; the 3,000-mile rule is a holdover from conventional oil.

Quick answer

For most cars built in the last fifteen years and running the full synthetic oil the manufacturer specifies, the interval is 7,500 to 10,000 miles, or once a year if you drive less than that. Conventional oil is a different animal and belongs on a 3,000 to 5,000-mile interval, but very few current engines are approved for it. If your driving is mostly short trips under five miles, add an extra change per year — cold starts do more damage to oil than highway miles do. If your dashboard shows an oil life percentage, follow it rather than a mileage number, because it is measuring the conditions your engine actually saw.

When it is actually due

Intervals move with how you drive, not just how far.

  • Full synthetic, normal service

    7,500–10,000 miles or 12 months

    This is what the factory schedule says for the majority of 2010-and-newer gasoline engines. Whichever comes first — oil oxidizes on the calendar even in a car that barely moves.

  • Full synthetic, severe service

    5,000–7,500 miles or 6 months

    Severe service means trips under 5 miles, extended idling, stop-and-go traffic, towing, dusty roads, or sustained heat above 90°F. Read that list honestly: a short suburban commute in Texas is severe service, and that describes how a large share of Americans actually drive.

  • Conventional oil

    3,000–5,000 miles

    Still correct for older engines with a conventional spec. Putting conventional oil in an engine that calls for synthetic is a false economy — turbocharged and direct-injection engines coke up bearings and turbo journals on it.

  • Turbocharged or direct-injection engine

    5,000–7,500 miles

    Turbo bearings see oil temperatures well above sump temperature, and DI engines dilute oil with fuel more than port-injected ones. Shortening the manufacturer interval by 20–30 percent on these is cheap insurance against timing chain and turbo wear.

Signs you are overdue

  • Oil life monitor reads under 15 percent, or a Maintenance Required / wrench icon has appeared.
  • The dipstick level is below the lower mark, or the oil is gritty rather than merely dark when rubbed between two fingers.
  • The engine is noisier at cold start — a brief top-end tick that fades after a few seconds means the oil is thin or low.
  • You smell oil after parking, or find spots on the driveway, which means the leak is now outpacing the interval.
  • Fuel economy has dropped a mile or two per gallon with no other change in driving.
  • It has been more than twelve months since the last change, regardless of the odometer.

Doing it yourself

The mechanical part is genuinely easy. The mistakes are predictable: overtightening the drain plug and stripping an aluminum pan, forgetting to lubricate the new filter gasket so it tears on removal next time, double-gasketing when the old filter's O-ring stays stuck to the housing, and driving off with the fill cap sitting on the cowl. Cartridge-style filters in a plastic housing crack if you torque the cap with a socket by feel — those have a printed torque spec, usually around 18–25 Nm. Getting under the car matters more than the oil does: use jack stands or ramps, never a jack alone. Used oil has to go back to a parts store or municipal collection point, and most take it free.

What changes by vehicle

Where the generic advice stops applying.

  • Toyota and Honda 4-cylinders

    Both use 0W-20 or 0W-16 and publish 10,000-mile intervals with synthetic. The thin grades are there for fuel economy and are not optional — going heavier interferes with variable valve timing actuation.

  • Ford EcoBoost and other turbo gas engines

    Ford's Intelligent Oil Life Monitor can stretch past 10,000 miles in easy service. Turbo bearing life argues for capping it nearer 7,500, especially on the 2.7L and 3.5L V6 in F-150 applications.

  • BMW and other European long-life schedules

    Factory intervals reach 10,000–15,000 miles on LL-01 or LL-17 FE+ oils. These engines are widely reported to consume oil between changes, so checking the level monthly matters more than the interval itself.

  • Hyundai and Kia GDI engines

    Fuel dilution and carbon are the known weak points across the Theta and Nu families. Hyundai's own severe-service column lands near 5,000 miles, and documented oil changes are what a powertrain warranty claim is judged against.

Why the 3,000-mile oil change is obsolete

The 3,000-mile interval was correct advice for conventional mineral oil in engines with looser tolerances, no closed-loop fuel control and far more blowby. Both sides of that equation changed. Modern base stocks resist oxidation for far longer, detergent and anti-wear additive packages last longer, and engines put less contamination into the oil to begin with.

No US manufacturer publishes a 3,000-mile interval for a current gasoline engine on the specified oil. The shops that recommend it are, in most cases, sincerely repeating advice that was true when they learned it. The cost of following it anyway is real: three or four extra services a year of ownership, plus the disposal burden.

Reading an oil change quote

A fair 2026 price for a full synthetic change on a 5-quart four-cylinder is roughly $60 to $95 at an independent shop or chain, and $80 to $130 at a dealer. Larger sumps push that up honestly: a 6.2L V8 pickup holds 8 quarts, a European V6 can hold 8 to 9, and a diesel can take 12 or more.

  • Shop supplies and disposal fees of $3 to $8 are normal. A percentage-based "shop supply" line of 10 percent on an oil change is not.
  • Engine flush at $80 to $150 is not on any manufacturer schedule and can dislodge deposits that then block oil passages.
  • Fuel system or induction service bundled into an oil change is a separate product being sold, not part of the oil change.
  • A free multi-point inspection is genuinely useful, but treat every red item on it as a second opinion candidate rather than an authorization.

The chain-shop tradeoff is real but narrow. The price is honest and the oil is usually the specified grade. What you are trading is the technician's familiarity with your specific engine, and the volume model creates pressure to sell the add-ons above. Compare against what an oil change should cost before agreeing to anything beyond oil and filter.

Frequently asked questions

Is it bad to change oil more often than the manual says?
It is not harmful to the engine, only to your wallet and the waste stream. If changing at 5,000 miles instead of 10,000 buys you peace of mind on a turbocharged or direct-injection engine, that is a defensible choice. Doing it at 3,000 miles on a modern engine running the specified synthetic buys essentially nothing.
Does synthetic oil actually last twice as long?
In terms of oxidation resistance and viscosity stability, yes — that is what the base stock buys you. What synthetic does not do is filter better or hold more soot, so the filter and the contamination load still set a practical ceiling. Follow the interval in the manual for the oil the manual specifies rather than doubling anything yourself.
Can I switch from conventional to synthetic on a high-mileage engine?
Yes. The old warning about synthetic causing leaks came from early ester-based formulations in the 1970s and does not apply to current products. What can happen is that a synthetic's stronger detergents clean deposits that were plugging an existing marginal seal, so a leak that was already there becomes visible. That is a revealed leak, not a caused one.
What happens if I go way past the interval?
Oil that is fully oxidized thickens, stops flowing quickly at cold start, and lets varnish and sludge build up in the tightest passages — which on modern engines includes variable valve timing solenoids and timing chain tensioners. A single overrun of a few thousand miles is survivable. A pattern of it is the leading cause of timing chain stretch and engine problems on direct-injection engines.
Do I need to change the filter every time?
Yes. The filter costs $6 to $15 and holds all the contamination the oil collected. Leaving it in place means the fresh oil immediately picks up what the old filter is holding, and a loaded filter eventually opens its bypass valve and stops filtering entirely.
