  2. Corroded or loose battery terminals

    Very common

    The white or blue-green crust on a terminal is an insulator.   4. No fuel delivery

    Common

    A failed crankshaft position sensor is the classic cause of a car that cranks perfectly and refuses to start. Without a crank signal the computer does not know where the pistons are, so it fires nothing at all. How to diagnose it

  1. Turn the key and identify the sound

    This is free and eliminates most of the possibilities in five seconds. Rapid clicking means low voltage. A single click means starter or solenoid. Strong cranking with no start means fuel, spark or compression. Total silence means no power reaching the ignition switch at all.

  2. Check dash lights and headlight brightness

    Turn the headlights on and have someone watch them while you crank. Lights that go dramatically dim or die entirely confirm a battery or connection problem. Lights that stay bright and steady while nothing happens point away from the battery and toward the starter or the start circuit.

  3. Inspect and clean the battery terminals

Two of those rows lead away from the starting system rather than into it. How to jump-start without damaging anything

Modern vehicles carry sensitive electronics, and a reversed cable or a spark near the battery can cause damage far more expensive than the no-start you started with. The order matters.

  1. Park the donor close, engines off

    Position the vehicles so the cables reach comfortably without the cars touching. Turn both engines completely off and set the parking brakes.

  2. Red to dead positive, red to donor positive

    Attach one red clamp to the dead battery's positive post, then the other red clamp to the donor's positive post.

  3. Black to donor negative, black to bare metal on the dead car

    The final black clamp goes on an unpainted engine bracket or strut tower on the dead vehicle — not the negative battery post. This puts the inevitable spark away from the hydrogen the battery vents.

  4. Start the donor, wait, then start the dead car

    Run the donor for 3 to 5 minutes to put some surface charge into the dead battery, then try starting. If it does not fire within 10 seconds, stop and reassess — more cranking will not fix it.

  5. Remove in reverse order and keep driving

    Take the clamps off in exactly the reverse sequence. Then drive for at least 20 to 30 minutes; idling in a driveway does not put meaningful charge back into a deeply discharged battery.
