Overview
2021 is a clean-sheet redesign — the CN7 generation — and it is a much more ambitious car than the Elantra it replaced. It is longer and lower, gets a genuinely modern interior with available twin 10.25-inch displays, and adds a hybrid to the range for the first time. Hyundai backs it with a 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty for the original owner, and 5 years/60,000 miles that transfers to subsequent owners.
The engine question is worth being clear about. The 2.0L Smartstream is a new design with multi-point port injection, not the Nu or Theta engines associated with Hyundai's connecting rod bearing failures and engine replacement campaigns. Those campaigns centered on 2.0L and 2.4L GDI engines from an earlier family. The 2021 Elantra's 2.0L is not part of that story, and it is one of the more reassuring things you can know about this car.

Better than Hyundai's reputation from a decade ago and better than most first-model-year redesigns. The engines are new-family designs that sit outside the Theta and Nu bearing-failure history, the body and paint are the usual Hyundai compromise, and the complaints that do exist skew toward software, infotainment and 12V battery behavior rather than powertrain failures. The transferable 5-year powertrain warranty is a real asset on the used market.
