Emissions faults rarely change how the car drives, which is exactly why they get ignored until an inspection fails. The system is also where the most expensive single sensor-adjacent repair lives: the catalytic converter.
The important habit here is to treat a converter code as a symptom, not a diagnosis. A converter that has been poisoned by a misfire or an oil leak will fail again in months if the upstream cause is not fixed first.
The other half of this category is what you can see rather than what the scanner reports. If your tailpipe is producing visible smoke, start at smoke from the exhaust — the color identifies which fluid is reaching the combustion chamber, and that single observation separates a normal cold-morning wisp from a repair that runs into four figures.
