Overview

2021 was the last year of the tenth-generation Civic, and that is a good thing to be buying. Honda had five model years to work through the platform's early problems — the 2017 A/C condensers, the 2017–2018 oil dilution calibration, the infotainment complaints — and the 2021 car benefits from all of it. Honda Sensing became standard across every trim for 2021, including the base LX, which was not true earlier in the run.

The chassis is the reason to want one. Honda gave this generation a longer wheelbase and a genuinely well-sorted suspension, and it steers with more precision than anything else at the price. Rear seat and trunk space are closer to a midsize car than a compact, and the hatchback's cargo area is larger than several small SUVs.

The powertrain choice matters more than the trim. The 2.0-liter naturally aspirated engine is slower, less economical and completely uncomplicated — no turbo, no direct-injection-only carbon concerns, no oil dilution question. The 1.5-liter turbo is quicker, quieter at cruise and better on fuel, but it is the engine with a history, and that history is entirely about how and where you drive.

Owners' most consistent complaints across this generation are road noise at highway speed, a touchscreen that lacked a volume knob until the 2019 refresh added one back, and windshields that crack from small impacts far more readily than they should. The first two are preferences. The third is a real cost item.

Does the 1.5-liter turbo require premium fuel?
No. Honda specifies 87 octane regular for the 174-horsepower 1.5T in LX, EX and Touring trims. The Si's higher-output version of the same engine is where premium is recommended, and the Type R requires it. Running premium in a standard 1.5T Civic buys you nothing.
Is the Civic CVT reliable?
Yes, in this generation, provided the fluid is changed. Honda's CVT has held up far better than the reputation the technology carries generally. The requirement is Honda HCF-2 fluid at roughly 60,000 miles. Universal CVT fluid causes shudder within a few thousand miles and is the single most common way a healthy Civic transmission gets ruined.
Should I be worried about oil dilution on a 2021?
Much less than on a 2017 or 2018. Honda revised the calibration and the 2021 car runs meaningfully warmer during warm-up. If you live somewhere cold and your commute is under five miles, check the dipstick monthly and change the oil every 5,000 miles rather than following the Maintenance Minder. How much power difference is there between the sedan and hatchback 1.5T?
The hatchback's 1.5-liter turbo is rated at 180 horsepower against the sedan's 174, because the hatch uses a dual exhaust with less back pressure. In practice the difference is not noticeable. Choose between the two on cargo space and styling, not output.
What should I inspect on a used 2021 Civic?
Check the windshield closely for chips, feel for rear brake drag by touching the rear wheels after a drive, pull the dipstick and smell the oil, and confirm the CVT fluid has been changed if the car is past 60,000 miles. Then run the VIN through NHTSA for open recalls.
