The Si was offered as a sedan and coupe with a manual only, and the Type R hatchback sat above everything. LX and Sport sedans use the 2.0-liter; EX and above use the 1.5-liter turbo.
Overview
2021 was the last year of the tenth-generation Civic, and that is a good thing to be buying. Honda had five model years to work through the platform's early problems — the 2017 A/C condensers, the 2017–2018 oil dilution calibration, the infotainment complaints — and the 2021 car benefits from all of it. Honda Sensing became standard across every trim for 2021, including the base LX, which was not true earlier in the run.
The chassis is the reason to want one. Honda gave this generation a longer wheelbase and a genuinely well-sorted suspension, and it steers with more precision than anything else at the price. Rear seat and trunk space are closer to a midsize car than a compact, and the hatchback's cargo area is larger than several small SUVs.
The powertrain choice matters more than the trim. The 2.0-liter naturally aspirated engine is slower, less economical and completely uncomplicated — no turbo, no direct-injection-only carbon concerns, no oil dilution question. The 1.5-liter turbo is quicker, quieter at cruise and better on fuel, but it is the engine with a history, and that history is entirely about how and where you drive.
Owners' most consistent complaints across this generation are road noise at highway speed, a touchscreen that lacked a volume knob until the 2019 refresh added one back, and windshields that crack from small impacts far more readily than they should. The first two are preferences. The third is a real cost item.
Reliability & running costs
Strong, with one qualification. The chassis, brakes, CVT and 2.0-liter engine have all proven durable. The 1.5-liter turbo is reliable in normal use but genuinely dislikes a life of two-mile trips in freezing weather, and that is the difference between a 5 and a 4 here.
