Lifter failure on these engines is common enough that a large aftermarket exists purely to disable the system, and it is the dominant long-term risk on this truck.
The 3.0-liter Duramax inline-six deserves mention as the quiet standout. It returns highway economy in the high 20s in two-wheel-drive form, makes 460 lb-ft, and is far smoother than a diesel in a half-ton truck has any right to be. It carries the usual diesel emissions-system complexity and a higher purchase price, which is why most buyers end up with the 5.3.
