The final year of the third-generation Tucson, sold as SE, Value, SEL, Sport, Limited and Ultimate, with front-wheel drive standard and all-wheel drive optional on every trim. SE and Value use the 2.0-liter; SEL and above use the 2.4-liter. Every 2021 Tucson has forward collision avoidance and lane keeping as standard, which was not true earlier in the generation.
Overview
The 2021 Tucson is the run-out year of a generation that Hyundai deliberately simplified partway through. When this body launched for 2016 the US range included a 1.6-liter turbo with a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission, and that combination drew steady complaints about hesitation and shudder at parking-lot speeds. For 2019 Hyundai dropped it entirely and standardized on naturally aspirated 2.0-liter and 2.4-liter engines with a conventional 6-speed torque converter automatic. The 2021 car is the least complicated version of this vehicle that exists.
What you get is a competent rather than exciting compact SUV with an unusually long equipment list. Both engines are adequate and neither is quick — the 2.0-liter takes around 9.5 seconds to 60 mph and the 2.4-liter about 9.0. Ride quality is good, the cabin is quiet for the class, and the driving position is genuinely comfortable. Rear seat space is average and cargo volume trails a CR-V or RAV4 noticeably.
The 2.4-liter engine is where buyers need to do homework. It is a member of the Theta II family, the direct-injected engine range at the center of Hyundai and Kia's engine failure recalls and extended warranty programs through the 2010s. Those campaigns covered specific engines by build plant and VIN range rather than by model year, so the only meaningful answer for any given Tucson comes from a VIN lookup — not from a forum, and not from the model year alone.
The warranty is the other decisive factor. Hyundai's 10-year, 100,000-mile powertrain coverage applies only to the original retail owner. Buy a used 2021 Tucson and you inherit 5 years and 60,000 miles from the original in-service date, which on a car of this age may already be gone. Verify the in-service date before you treat the warranty as part of the deal.
