Drive it, but get the code read within a week and do not start a long road trip on an unread code — a small unresolved fault such as a misfire can quietly destroy a catalytic converter over a few hundred miles. What the light means
The engine control module watches a few dozen sensors on every drive and compares what it reads against what it expects. When a value stays outside its window long enough — usually across two consecutive drive cycles — the module stores a diagnostic trouble code and turns on this lamp, which the industry calls the MIL, or malfunction indicator lamp. The lamp itself carries no severity information: a gas cap you did not click shut and a catalytic converter that has stopped converting light exactly the same bulb. Only reading the stored code narrows it down, and that read takes about two minutes. What the lamp does tell you is that the car is no longer meeting its emissions calibration, which is why a stored code is an automatic inspection failure in OBD-II testing states.
Flashing vs steady
A flashing check engine light means an active misfire is dumping raw unburned fuel into the exhaust right now. That fuel ignites inside the catalytic converter, which can exceed 1,600°F and melt its internal substrate in a matter of minutes — a $900 to $2,800 part destroyed by a $60 ignition coil. Reduce speed, get off the throttle, pull over safely and shut the engine off. If the flashing stops and the light goes steady, a short low-speed drive to a shop is usually survivable; if it keeps flashing, tow it. See P0300.
What to do right now
1Look at the lamp again — is it steady or flashing? Flashing changes what you do next completely.
2Scan the rest of the dash. A check engine light on its own is a different situation from one paired with a red oil pressure or temperature lamp.
3Notice how the car is driving right now: hesitation, a stumble at idle, loss of power, a new noise or a fuel smell all move this up the priority list.
4If nothing has changed in how it drives, keep going and get the code read within a few days. Most US chain parts stores read codes at no charge.
5Check the gas cap. Tighten it until it clicks at least once — a loose cap is one of the most common single causes of this light.

Very common
The evaporative emissions system seals the fuel tank and periodically pressure-tests itself. A cap that was not clicked shut, a cracked cap seal, or a split purge hose lets that test fail and sets P0455 for a large leak or P0442 for a small one. Nothing about how the car drives changes, which is exactly why drivers ignore it.
How to spot it
The light appeared within a drive or two of filling up, and the car drives completely normally.
The fix
Tighten or replace the gas cap and clear the code. If it returns, have the EVAP system smoke-tested to find the actual leak.
Oxygen sensors live in the exhaust stream and tell the computer how much fuel to inject. They get slow and lazy with age — typically 80,000 to 150,000 miles — long before they fail outright. A lazy sensor makes the computer overfuel, which costs mileage and slowly contaminates the converter downstream.

Fuel economy dropped five to fifteen percent over a few months, and the stored code names a specific bank and sensor position.

Ignition coil or spark plug misfire
Common
A coil that has started breaking down under load stops firing its cylinder reliably. The computer detects the missing combustion event through crankshaft speed variation and sets P0300 for a random misfire or P0301 and its siblings when it can name the cylinder. This is the cause that makes the light flash.
How to spot it
Rough idle, a shudder or hesitation under acceleration, and a light that may flash when you get on the throttle.
The fix
Replace the failed coil and, on a high-mileage engine, the full set of spark plugs so the new coil is not working against a worn gap.
Rubber intake hoses, PCV lines and intake manifold gaskets harden and crack with heat cycles. Unmetered air sneaking in past the mass airflow sensor makes the mixture lean, the computer adds fuel to compensate, and once it runs out of correction it sets P0171.
How to spot it
Idle hunts up and down or sits higher than normal, sometimes with a faint whistle from the engine bay at idle.
The fix
Smoke-test the intake to find the leak, then replace the cracked hose, PCV valve or manifold gasket.
The computer compares the upstream and downstream oxygen sensor signals. When the downstream sensor starts mirroring the upstream one, the converter is no longer storing and releasing oxygen, and P0420 sets. Converters rarely die of old age alone — they are usually poisoned by an untreated misfire, an oil burner or coolant entering the exhaust.
How to spot it
The light comes back a few dozen miles after every clear, the car drives normally, and there may be a rotten-egg sulfur smell at idle.
The fix
Fix the upstream cause first, then replace the converter. Skipping that step means the new converter fails the same way.
A shop pulls the codes, reads freeze-frame data showing engine conditions at the moment the fault set, and tests the named circuit. Free code reads at a parts store give you the code number only — that is a starting point, not a diagnosis.

Clearing a code erases the stored record. It does not repair anything. The computer immediately begins re-running the same self-tests, and if the condition is still present the light returns — sometimes within a mile, sometimes after a few days, depending on how many drive cycles that particular monitor needs to complete.
The underlying fault was never fixed. The most common reason by a wide margin.
The repair was correct but incomplete. A new converter behind an unrepaired misfire fails again; a new oxygen sensor behind a vacuum leak reads exactly as wrong as the old one.
Two faults were stored and only one was addressed. Fixing the loose gas cap does nothing about the lazy oxygen sensor also sitting in memory.
The monitor needed more time. Some readiness monitors require a specific drive pattern — cold start, steady cruise, deceleration — before they run at all, so the light can reappear days later.
