2021 BMW 3 Series
330i and 330i xDrive with the 2.0L turbo four, M340i and M340i xDrive with the 3.0L turbo six, and the 330e and 330e xDrive plug-in hybrids. All use an 8-speed automatic — no manual was offered in the US on the G20 sedan. The M3 is a separate model on its own chassis code.
Overview
The 2021 3 Series is the G20 generation that launched for 2019, and it restored a lot of what enthusiasts felt the previous car had lost — better steering, a stiffer body, and in M340i form a 382 hp inline-six that will run to 60 mph in the mid-four-second range. For 2021 BMW made the 330e plug-in hybrid available with xDrive and added a wireless charging pad and updated iDrive across the range.
Two things shape ownership here more than the spec sheet. First, this is a car engineered around dealer service intervals and BMW-specific procedures — batteries must be registered to the vehicle, the transmission is called fill-for-life, and a lot of diagnostics need a scan tool that reads BMW modules properly. Second, the running costs are simply in a different bracket. Brake jobs, tires, oil services and the eventual maintenance items all cost two to three times what they do on a Camry, and that is before anything breaks.
- B48 and B58 are both direct-injection only. Intake valve carbon accumulation is a long-term maintenance item, not a defect.
- Run-flat tires are standard on most examples and they are expensive, harsh, and cannot be repaired after most punctures.
- The electric coolant pump is a known failure item across modern BMW engines and it causes overheating when it goes.
- Oil leaks at the filter housing gasket and valve cover are the classic BMW mileage-related expense.
Reliability & running costs
Mechanically sound in the way that matters — the B48 and B58 engines and the ZF 8-speed are all well-regarded, and the G20 has no defining defect the way some earlier BMW generations did. The three is about cost, not fragility. Ordinary maintenance items on this car are expensive, several known wear points arrive between 60,000 and 100,000 miles, and BMW-specific procedures mean fewer independent shops can do the work correctly. A well-kept example is a genuinely good car with a genuinely high running cost.

On the B58 inline-six, a single-cylinder misfire is most often an ignition coil, and swapping the coil to an adjacent cylinder to see whether the misfire follows is the fastest free diagnostic. A lean bank on the B48 or B58 usually means a crankcase ventilation leak. The diaphragm is integrated into the valve cover on these engines, so the repair is a valve cover assembly rather than a hose — the same part implicated in oil leaks, which is why the two symptoms often appear together. BMW's evap system includes a diagnostic leak detection pump, and a large leak code here frequently traces to that pump or its hose rather than the fuel cap.
