Overview
The 2021 Escape is the second year of the fourth-generation crossover Ford introduced for 2020. It is lower, lighter and more car-like than the boxy Escape it replaced, rides on Ford's C2 platform shared with the Bronco Sport, and offers more powertrain variety than almost anything in its class — a three-cylinder turbo, a four-cylinder turbo, a conventional hybrid and a 37-mile plug-in hybrid.
The 1.5L EcoBoost is the engine most Escapes have and it is the one with a real problem history. Ford has recalled 2020–2022 Escapes with this engine for coolant that can leak into the cylinders, causing misfires, overheating and in some cases engine damage or fire. This is not an obscure bulletin — it is the defining reliability question for this vehicle and it needs a VIN check before any purchase.
- Hybrid and plug-in models use the 2.5L Atkinson engine, which is a completely different unit and is not part of the coolant intrusion story.
- The 2.0L EcoBoost is a four-cylinder with its own architecture and also sits outside that issue.
- The 8F35 eight-speed automatic on the gas models is a separate common complaint — shudder and harsh shifts at low speed.
- The hybrid's eCVT has no belt, no torque converter and none of the 8F35's behavior.

The 1.5L EcoBoost coolant intrusion recall covers a large share of 2020–2022 Escapes and the failure mode ranges from a misfire to a destroyed engine. The hybrid, with a different engine and a much simpler transmission, is a substantially better bet and would score well above this on its own.

On the 2.0L EcoBoost this usually means a charge-air leak: check the intercooler pipe clamps and the crankcase ventilation hose, both of which harden and split in the engine bay's heat.
