The 2021 Escape is the second year of the fourth-generation crossover Ford introduced for 2020. It is lower, lighter and more car-like than the boxy Escape it replaced, rides on Ford's C2 platform shared with the Bronco Sport, and offers more powertrain variety than almost anything in its class — a three-cylinder turbo, a four-cylinder turbo, a conventional hybrid and a 37-mile plug-in hybrid.

The 1.5L EcoBoost is the engine most Escapes have and it is the one with a real problem history. Ford has recalled 2020–2022 Escapes with this engine for coolant that can leak into the cylinders, causing misfires, overheating and in some cases engine damage or fire. This is not an obscure bulletin — it is the defining reliability question for this vehicle and it needs a VIN check before any purchase.

  • Hybrid and plug-in models use the 2.5L Atkinson engine, which is a completely different unit and is not part of the coolant intrusion story.
  • The 2.0L EcoBoost is a four-cylinder with its own architecture and also sits outside that issue.
  • The 8F35 eight-speed automatic on the gas models is a separate common complaint — shudder and harsh shifts at low speed.
  • The hybrid's eCVT has no belt, no torque converter and none of the 8F35's behavior.

    On a 1.5L Escape, treat a random misfire as a coolant intrusion question until proven otherwise. Check the coolant reservoir level and have a combustion leak test done on the coolant before spending money on coils or injectors — an ordinary ignition fault does not come with a slowly falling coolant level.     On the 2.0L EcoBoost this usually means a charge-air leak: check the intercooler pipe clamps and the crankcase ventilation hose, both of which harden and split in the engine bay's heat. Should I avoid the 1.5L EcoBoost Escape entirely?
Not necessarily, but only buy one where you can confirm the coolant intrusion recall has been completed, and where the coolant level is at the full mark with no history of top-ups. If you cannot verify either, buy the hybrid or the 2.0L instead. This is the one issue on this vehicle worth being inflexible about.
Is the Escape Hybrid a better buy than the gas model?
Mechanically, yes. Different engine, no 8F35, no coolant intrusion campaign, an eCVT with very few wear items, and roughly 41 mpg combined. It costs more up front and it is the version to look for if you are keeping the vehicle a long time.
What is the shudder I feel around 30 mph?
Almost always the 8F35's torque converter lock-up clutch juddering rather than an engine problem. Have the transmission control software updated and the fluid exchanged with MERCON ULV before anyone quotes you a torque converter.
Why does auto start-stop keep switching itself off?
The system disables itself when the battery monitoring sensor reads a low state of charge, when the cabin is far from its target temperature, or when the engine has not reached operating temperature. Persistent refusal usually means the AGM battery is weak or was replaced without being registered to the charging system.
How does it compare to the Chevrolet Equinox?
