Mechanically, this is the conservative choice in the segment. The 2.5-liter four is naturally aspirated with both port and direct injection, which means intake valve carbon does not build up the way it does on direct-injection-only engines. Behind it is a conventional 8-speed torque converter automatic rather than a CVT or dual-clutch. The V6 is the same 3.5-liter used across the Toyota and Lexus range and is one of the most durable engines the company makes.

What owners consistently report is that nothing goes wrong and nothing is exciting. The two most common complaints in this generation are road noise — the TNGA shell transmits more tire roar than the 2012–2017 car did — and a ride that firms up noticeably on the 19-inch wheels fitted to XSE and TRD trims. Does the 2021 Camry really need 0W-16 oil?
The 2.5-liter four-cylinder specifies 0W-16 full synthetic, and it is worth using. The thinner oil is part of how Toyota achieves the fuel economy rating and the engine's bearing clearances were designed around it. Toyota permits 0W-20 as a temporary substitute if 0W-16 is unavailable, but it should be changed back at the next service. The V6 uses 0W-20.
Should I buy the hybrid instead?
If most of your driving is urban or suburban, yes. The hybrid returns roughly 50 mpg combined in LE form against about 32 for the gasoline four, and the electric assist makes it smoother in traffic. The hybrid also uses regenerative braking, so pads and rotors routinely last past 100,000 miles. If you drive mostly highway miles the gap narrows to a few mpg and the price premium takes longer to recover.
Is premium fuel required for the V6?
No. Toyota specifies 87 octane regular for both the 2.5-liter four and the 3.5-liter V6 in the Camry. Premium will not produce more power or better economy in this application.
How long does the 8-speed transmission fluid last?
Toyota lists the fluid as filled for life under normal use and calls for inspection at 60,000 miles. In practice, a drain and fill every 60,000 to 80,000 miles is cheap insurance, particularly if you tow, drive in heavy traffic or live somewhere hot. Use Toyota WS fluid only — universal ATF causes shudder in this transmission.
What should I check on a used 2021 Camry before buying?
Confirm the 12-volt battery's age, check rear brake and parking brake operation on the test drive, scan for stored codes even if no light is on, and run the VIN through the NHTSA database for open recalls.
