  2. Blown head gasket

    Common

    The head gasket seals the cylinder head to the engine block, keeping combustion pressure, coolant passages and oil galleries separate from each other. When it fails between a cylinder and a coolant passage, coolant is drawn into the chamber and burned with the fuel. This is the most common genuine fault behind persistent white smoke, and it is very often the consequence of an earlier overheating event rather than a spontaneous failure.

    Occasional

    Aluminum cylinder heads distort when they get hot enough, and a head that has been warped by an overheat can crack through a coolant passage. The symptom set is nearly identical to a blown head gasket, which is exactly why a shop sends the head out for pressure testing and crack detection once it is off — the gasket is replaced either way, and the question is whether the head can be reused.

    Rare

On most vehicles this is the point where a used or remanufactured engine becomes the sensible option rather than a repair.

    Occasional

    On turbocharged engines, the turbo is fed both oil and — on many designs — coolant, and worn center-section seals can let either into the exhaust stream. Coolant past the seals reads as white smoke; oil past the same seals reads as blue smoke.     Common

    In a diesel, white or light gray smoke most often means fuel is being injected and not combusting — the opposite of the gasoline story. Worn injection pumps, stuck or leaking injector nozzles, retarded injection timing and weak compression all produce it. How to diagnose it

  1. Let it reach full operating temperature, then look again

    This is the step that decides everything else, and it costs nothing. Idle the car or drive it until the temperature gauge is sitting where it normally sits, then check the mirror or have someone look at the tailpipe. If the white has gone, you were watching condensation and the diagnosis ends here. If it is still there — or worse — continue.

  2. Check the coolant level cold, and check the oil

    With the engine fully cold, look at the coolant reservoir against its marks and note the level so you can compare in a few days. Then pull the oil dipstick and look at the oil cap. Coolant leaking into the oil produces a milky tan emulsion that is unmistakable once you have seen it. A reservoir that keeps dropping with no puddle under the car is the single most telling observation in this whole process.

  3. Run a chemical block test on the coolant

The engine must be at operating temperature with the thermostat open, and there needs to be two to three inches of air space above the coolant so you are drawing air rather than sucking fluid into the tester.   5. Cylinder leak-down test

    With the spark plugs out and the cylinder at top dead center on the compression stroke, compressed air is fed into the cylinder and the technician listens for where it escapes. Bubbling or hissing at the radiator means the cylinder is leaking into a coolant passage. Hissing at the oil filler means it is leaking into the crankcase. Air out of the tailpipe means a burnt exhaust valve, which is a different repair entirely.

It is a genuinely useful tool and it is what most shops reach for first, but practising technicians report false negatives when the breach is small or the sample is taken incorrectly. A negative block test on a car that is visibly losing coolant internally does not clear the head gasket — it means the test needs repeating alongside a pressure test and a leak-down test.

Why continuing to drive makes this materially more expensive
