Stop driving. A thermostat is $150 to $450 and a head gasket is $1,200 to $2,800, and the only thing separating those two outcomes is how many minutes the engine runs hot. If the lamp goes out after the engine cools and the reservoir was low, a short low-speed drive to a shop with the heater on full and the gauge watched constantly is a calculated risk. If the lamp comes straight back on, or the reservoir was full, tow it — a full reservoir with an overheating engine usually means no circulation at all.

What the light means

A sensor in the cylinder head or thermostat housing reports coolant temperature to the instrument cluster, and this lamp lights when that reading passes roughly 250 to 260°F — well above the 195 to 220°F band a healthy engine runs at all day. A pressurised cooling system holds around 15 psi, which raises the boiling point of a 50/50 coolant mix to about 265°F, so by the time this lamp is on you are close to boiling the coolant inside the block. Once coolant turns to steam it stops carrying heat away, and aluminum cylinder heads warp, head gaskets let go and pistons scuff within minutes. This is one of two lamps on the dashboard that can convert a $200 repair into a $3,000 one while you drive to the next exit.

What to do right now

  1. 1Turn the air conditioning off and the heater to full hot with the fan on high. The heater core is a second radiator and can pull real heat out of the engine.
  2. 2Pull over at the first safe place and shut the engine off. Do not try to make it home.
  3. 3If steam or spray is coming from under the hood, stay in the car with the hood shut until it stops.
  4. 4Do not open the radiator cap or coolant reservoir on a hot engine. The system is pressurised and will spray scalding coolant. Wait at least 30 to 45 minutes.

Why it comes on

  1. Low coolant from a leak

    Very common

    Cooling systems are sealed, so a low reservoir means coolant left somewhere. Radiator end tanks crack, hoses split at the clamp, the water pump weeps from its bearing seal, and plastic thermostat housings develop hairline cracks. Air drawn in behind the lost coolant forms pockets that stop circulation entirely.

    How to spot it

    The reservoir is at or below MIN, with a sweet smell, a colored puddle under the front of the car, or dried crusty residue around a clamp or seam.

    Pressure-test the system cold, replace the failed component, then refill and properly bleed the air out — an unbled system overheats even with the leak fixed.

  2. Thermostat stuck closed

    Very common

    The thermostat is a wax-pellet valve that blocks flow to the radiator until the engine reaches operating temperature. When it sticks shut, coolant circulates only inside the engine and the temperature climbs with nowhere to dump the heat. It is one of the cheapest parts on the car and one of the most destructive when it fails.

    How to spot it

    Temperature climbs hard within the first ten minutes of driving, and the upper radiator hose stays cool to the touch while the engine gets hot.

    Replace the thermostat and its gasket or O-ring, refill and bleed. Replace the housing too if it is the cracking plastic type.

  3. Cooling fan or fan clutch not running

    Common

    At highway speed, airflow through the radiator comes from driving. In traffic it comes entirely from the electric fan or, on older trucks, a viscous fan clutch. When the fan motor, relay, or the temperature sensor that commands it fails, the engine cools fine at speed and cooks at every red light.

    How to spot it

    Temperature rises in stop-and-go traffic and falls again once you are moving. The air conditioning also blows warm at idle, since the same fan cools the condenser.

    Test the fan relay, motor and control circuit, then replace the fan assembly or the coolant temperature sensor commanding it.

  4. Water pump failure

    Common

    The pump's impeller moves coolant through the block and radiator. Bearings fail, seals weep, and on some engines a plastic impeller erodes or spins loose on its shaft — which produces no noise and no leak, just an engine that overheats with a full reservoir.

    How to spot it

    A whine or growl from the front of the engine, coolant dripping from the pump's weep hole, or a full system that overheats anyway with both radiator hoses staying cool.

    Replace the pump. On engines where the timing belt drives the pump, replace the belt at the same time — the labor overlaps almost completely.

  5. Head gasket failure

    Occasional

    Usually the consequence of a previous overheat rather than the cause of this one. Combustion pressure pushes into the cooling system, forcing coolant out of the reservoir and creating air pockets, while coolant leaks the other way into the cylinders and the oil.

    How to spot it

    White sweet-smelling smoke from the tailpipe, bubbles rising in the reservoir at idle, milky residue under the oil cap, or coolant that disappears with no external leak anywhere.

    Confirm with a combustion leak test at the reservoir, then head gasket replacement including a machine shop check that the head is still flat.

What the gauge is doing before the light comes on

On most vehicles the temperature gauge needle sits in the same place from January to July, because the cluster damps the reading to avoid alarming drivers over normal fluctuation. That means by the time the needle visibly moves, real temperature has already climbed a long way — and by the time the lamp joins it, you are past the design limit.

Overheating in traffic versus overheating on the highway

Where the engine overheats narrows the cause faster than any tool. The radiator gets its airflow from two sources — vehicle speed and the cooling fan — and coolant circulation is a separate variable on top of that.

  • Overheats at idle and in traffic, cools down at speed. Airflow is the problem: a dead cooling fan, failed fan relay, or a slipping fan clutch. The air conditioning usually goes warm at idle at the same time.
  • Overheats on the highway, fine in town. Heat load is the problem: low coolant, a partly blocked radiator core, or a thermostat that opens only partway.
  • Overheats everywhere, quickly. Circulation has stopped — a thermostat stuck shut, a failed water pump impeller, or a system full of air.
  • Overheats only when towing or climbing. Marginal capacity, often a radiator that is 60 to 70 percent blocked internally after years without a coolant flush.

One more pattern is worth knowing: an engine that overheats while the heater blows cold air almost always has low coolant or trapped air, because the heater core sits high in the system and loses circulation first.

Frequently asked questions

Can I drive a few miles to a shop if it is overheating?
Only after it has fully cooled, only if the reservoir was low and you have refilled it, and only with the heater on full and the gauge watched every few seconds. If the lamp comes back on, stop again immediately. A full reservoir with an overheating engine means coolant is not circulating at all, and in that case no distance is safe.
Why does turning the heat on help cool the engine?
The heater core is a small radiator inside the dashboard fed by engine coolant. Opening the blend door and running the fan on high forces cabin air across it and dumps real heat out of the engine — enough to buy a mile or two of driving in a mild case. It is miserable in July and it works.
Can I just put water in the radiator?
In an emergency, yes — plain water is far better than running an engine dry. Understand what you are trading: water boils at a lower temperature than a 50/50 coolant mix, offers no corrosion protection, and freezes solid in winter, which can crack a block. Use it to get to a shop, then have the system drained and refilled with the correct coolant.
The temperature light is on but the engine does not feel hot. Why?
Two possibilities, and both are worth stopping for. If the coolant level has dropped below the sensor, the sensor is reading steam rather than liquid and the reading swings wildly. Or the sensor or its wiring has failed outright. You cannot tell which from the driver's seat, so treat it as real until the level is checked.
My temperature light is blue, not red. Is that a problem?
No. Many vehicles use a blue thermometer symbol to indicate the engine is still below operating temperature after a cold start. It goes out on its own within a few minutes of driving. If a blue lamp stays on for a whole trip, the thermostat is stuck open — not dangerous, but it hurts fuel economy and cabin heat.
