How Often Should You Change Coolant?
Coolant intervals run from 2 years or 30,000 miles for older silicated formulas to 5 years or 150,000 miles for long-life chemistry — and the colour in your reservoir tells you which one you have exactly nothing about.

The classic interval, corroborated across AutoZone, Kelley Blue Book and technical forums. The reason it is short is that inorganic silicate and phosphate inhibitors form a fast-acting protective film and deplete quickly.
Extended-life OAT coolant, general
Up to 5 years or 100,000 miles
Organic acid technology uses slow-acting carboxylate inhibitors with no silicate or phosphate, which is why it lasts several times longer.
GM Dex-Cool (OAT), secondary sources
5 years or 150,000 miles
Reported as extended to six years on some 2023 and later models. We could not verify either figure against a GM-published document, so treat this row as an indication of magnitude, not as a manufacturer recommendation.

Vented rather than sealed cooling systems

From Dorman Products, and worth knowing because it is the one condition-based qualifier we found from a parts manufacturer. A closed system with extended-life coolant is given three to four years by the same source.
Signs you are overdue
- The fluid is discoloured, cloudy, or has visible rust, scale or particulate floating in it.
- An oily sheen on the surface of the coolant in the reservoir.
- A test strip shows the pH has fallen — coolant turning acidic is the meaningful driveway-measurable sign that the inhibitor package is spent.
- No record of a coolant service and the mileage or age is past what your specific chemistry calls for.
- The cooling system has been topped up repeatedly with whatever was on the shelf, so nobody knows what is actually in it.

Every make and model
We publish no per-vehicle intervals here. We researched seventeen specific model years and could not source a single one to a manufacturer-published document. Widely repeated figures — Toyota first fill at 100,000 miles then 50,000, Hyundai at 120,000 then 60,000 — come from forums and aggregators only. Your manual is free and it is right.
Vehicles with a first-fill interval
Several manufacturers schedule the factory coolant far longer than every subsequent fill. A genuine Honda maintenance schedule we located specifies coolant first at 120,000 miles or 10 years and then every 60,000 miles or 5 years. That document covers an early-2000s model rather than a current one, so take the structure as real and the specific numbers as belonging to that car, not yours.
Anything topped up with universal coolant
Universal or all-makes coolant is formulated to be compatible rather than optimal. Once a system has been topped up with it, you no longer know the inhibitor balance, and the OEM interval no longer describes what is in the engine. Treat the system as due on the shorter of the two schedules.

The population covered by the Dex-Cool class action settlement, which alleged degraded intake manifold gaskets and rusty sludge that clogged cooling systems. Relevant history if you own one; see the section below for what that episode does and does not prove.
Coolant colour does not tell you the chemistry
This is the correction most worth making on this topic, because the folklore is near-universal and it is wrong. Manufacturers add dye for identification within their own product line. Different manufacturers use different colours for identical chemistry, and different chemistries appear in the same colour. Orange does not automatically mean Dex-Cool, and not every orange coolant is interchangeable with every other orange coolant.

You will very often see HOAT given as 3 to 5 years or 50,000 miles. We are leaving that cell blank deliberately. That figure appears in Google's AI summary attributed to a specific source, and that source's own page does not say it. We would rather show you a gap than repeat a number whose stated origin does not contain it.
Why coolant has an interval at all
Coolant does three jobs: it lowers the freezing point, it raises the boiling point — helped further by system pressure — and it inhibits corrosion in an engine built from cast iron, aluminium, copper, brass, solder, plastics and rubber all in contact with the same fluid. Water pump seal lubrication is commonly listed as a fourth.
One consequence follows directly and it catches a lot of people out. A hydrometer or refractometer measures freeze point, which is a function of the glycol-to-water ratio. It tells you nothing whatsoever about whether the inhibitors are still there. Coolant that tests as protected to well below zero can be chemically exhausted and offering no corrosion protection at all. Test strips that read pH alongside freeze point are the more useful driveway tool, since falling pH tracks depletion. Actual carboxylate or silicate reserve needs a lab.
What actually happens if you mix coolants
The folklore says mixing turns coolant to sludge. The documented case is narrower and considerably more interesting than the folklore, and it is worth knowing what it does and does not establish.
GM's Dex-Cool class action received final approval in California Superior Court in October 2008. The allegations were that Dex-Cool degraded intake manifold gaskets and other sealing components in certain vehicles, and that in certain others it formed a rusty sludge that clogged the cooling system and caused overheating. The affected population was specific: certain 1995 to 2004 GM vehicles with 3.1, 3.4, 3.8 or 4.3 litre engines. The settlement was $24.2 million, with reimbursement up to $400 per repair in the first five years, tapering to $50 by year seven.
What we could not find, having looked, is a documented case of gelling caused specifically by mixing two off-the-shelf coolant types in a healthy, sealed system. Absent that, the honest version of the advice is this: mixing defeats the specification your manufacturer validated and destroys a deliberately balanced inhibitor package, which is reason enough not to do it. It is not reason to believe your engine will fill with jelly overnight. And if a system has been topped up with something unknown, the fix is a full flush and a refill to specification rather than panic.
On chemical flush products specifically: we found them sold at retail from about four dollars to thirty, and shop pages promoting the service, but no study and no manufacturer procedure showing that a chemical flush improves outcomes over a plain drain-and-fill on a healthy system. Several manufacturers advise against additives outright. We are not endorsing them.
What fresh coolant will not fix
Most articles on this topic bundle three unrelated things under the heading of signs you need a coolant flush: coolant that has degraded, coolant that is leaking out, and a cooling system with a mechanical fault. They are different problems with different fixes, and confusing them is how people spend money on a flush that changes nothing.

Put plainly: a sweet smell is a leak symptom and overheating is a fault symptom. Neither is a sign that your coolant has aged out. If the gauge is moving, start with car overheating. If the level drops with no obvious puddle, start with coolant leak. If there is white smoke from the exhaust, stop reading maintenance pages and get it diagnosed.
