    Water is a product of normal combustion. On a cold start it condenses inside a cold exhaust and leaves as visible vapor until the pipe heats up.     Common

  4. Excess fuel — black smoke

    Common

    The engine is being given more fuel than it can burn. A clogged air filter, a leaking injector, a failed sensor or a stuck fuel pressure regulator will all do it.     Sooty black smoke, noticeably worse fuel economy, black deposits around the tailpipe, and frequently a stored rich-mixture code such as P0172 or P0175. Note that a lean code like P0171 points the other way and does not fit black smoke.

How to diagnose it

  1. Establish the color properly

    Color is hard to judge against a dark driveway. Have someone hold a sheet of white paper or a light-colored cloth about a foot behind the tailpipe while the engine idles, and look at the smoke against that. Blue and thin white are easy to confuse in poor light, and they lead to completely different repairs.

  2. Run the engine to full operating temperature

    Let it idle until the temperature gauge settles in its normal position, then watch the tailpipe again. Condensation stops. Coolant, oil and fuel do not.

    Result: Smoke that survives full warm-up is a fault. Smoke that stops is almost always water vapor.

  3. Check both fluid levels before anything else

    Coolant in the reservoir and oil on the dipstick, both with the engine cold and the car level. This is free, takes two minutes, and it is the check that turns a guess into a diagnosis — a fluid that is disappearing with no leak on the ground is being burned.

Can you keep driving a car that is smoking?

This is the question most people arrive with, and the honest answer is that there is no single answer — the three colors sit at genuinely different points on the risk scale, and treating them the same is how a cheap repair becomes an expensive one.

Thick white that stays
Stop. Coolant in a cylinder can hydraulically resist the piston and cause severe internal damage, and every mile driven with coolant escaping raises the risk of overheating on top of the original fault.
Blue or gray
You can usually keep driving, but check the oil level far more often than usual. The danger is not the smoke — it is running the engine low on oil without noticing.
Black and sooty
Short trips are generally fine while you get it diagnosed. The cost of waiting is a catalytic converter, not a seized engine.

White smoke but the temperature gauge is normal

This combination confuses people constantly, and the assumption behind the confusion is wrong. A head gasket failure does not have to cause overheating. If the breach is between a coolant passage and a combustion chamber, coolant leaves through the cylinder and out of the exhaust — the remaining coolant may still be circulating perfectly well and holding normal temperature, right up until enough of it has gone.

So a normal temperature gauge does not clear you. The reliable indicator is the coolant level, not the gauge.
