Mechanical vs electric — the biggest cost driver
For decades a water pump was a simple mechanical device: an impeller on a shaft, driven off the crank or camshaft by a belt. Modern engines increasingly use an electric water pump — a self-contained unit with its own motor, controller and coolant circuit — because that lets the ECU decide when and how fast to circulate coolant. The two are not comparable jobs.

Why KBB and RepairPal give different numbers
The two dominant estimator sources for this repair land in noticeably different places: KBB says $400 to $800; RepairPal says $885 to $1,134. Both are national averages — the difference is what each includes.
- KBB's range describes the pump itself installed on an accessible engine with a serpentine-driven pump — the majority case, and the cheap end of the possibility space.
- RepairPal's range weights the average toward timing-belt-driven pumps, electric pumps and transverse V6s, all of which push labor toward the top of the range.
- A Reddit comment inside the SERP — "the pump should cost $37 to $128 max at Rockauto" — describes only the part, and only if you already know it fits your vehicle. Buying a $37 pump for a $500-labor job is not the saving it looks like.
Neither source is wrong. The right number for you depends on which pump type you have and how accessible it is on your engine — details a shop should be able to answer in a phone call.
Thermostat overlap and the coolant that gets replaced
A water pump job drains most of the cooling system, and the thermostat is usually right there. Replacing a $25 thermostat during a $600 pump job adds nothing to labor and prevents an overheat six months later that will get blamed on the pump.
- Refill only with the coolant your manufacturer specifies. OAT, HOAT, phosphated OAT and traditional silicated all use different inhibitor chemistries, and mixing them precipitates gel and eats seals.
- Bleed the system with the correct procedure. Most modern engines have a specific fill point and bleed sequence — some require holding RPM at 3,000 for several minutes with the cap off, some need a vacuum-fill tool. Air pockets cause repeat overheats blamed on the new pump.
- Pressure test after refill. Confirms there is no leak from the new gasket or a hose that was disturbed.
