The coolant loop as a system
A radiator does not fail in isolation. It is part of a loop that includes the water pump, thermostat, hoses, expansion tank, cap and heater core. When one component fails, the others are usually the same age and stressed by the same conditions.
- Upper and lower radiator hoses should be pressure-tested with the coolant drained. Any hose that has swollen at the clamp, gone soft, or is showing surface cracks is due.
