2021 Ford Escape
2021 Ford Escape: 1.5L EcoBoost Coolant Intrusion into the Cylinders
Coolant leaks into a cylinder through a crack between the coolant jacket and combustion chamber, causing misfires, white exhaust smoke, coolant loss without an external leak, overheating and potential engine failure. Subject to a Ford recall covering 2020–2022 Escapes.

This one splits in two. Thin vapor on a cold morning that disappears within a minute is water, and the car is fine to drive. Thick white smoke that is still there once the temperature gauge has come up means coolant is entering the combustion chamber, and continuing to drive risks warping the cylinder head or cracking the block — turning a gasket repair into an engine replacement.

What is different on the 2021 Ford Escape
The vehicle-specific detail — not the generic version of this fault.
This is specific to Ford's 1.5L three-cylinder EcoBoost as fitted to the Escape and Bronco Sport. A crack can form in the cylinder head between the coolant passage and the combustion chamber. Coolant then enters the cylinder, where it is burned off — which is why the coolant reservoir drops steadily while you can find no puddle under the vehicle and no oil contamination. The general mechanism, and how to tell burning coolant apart from harmless condensation, is covered in white smoke from exhaust; if the temperature gauge is also climbing, read car overheating alongside it.
- Coolant level falling with no visible leak is the earliest and most important sign. Do not just keep topping it up.
- Later symptoms include a rough idle, a misfire code, sweet-smelling white smoke from the exhaust, and a temperature warning light.
- Because the coolant is burned rather than mixed into the oil, the milkshake-under-the-oil-cap test that works on a blown head gasket will often look completely normal here.
- Ford's recall remedy includes engine control software that detects coolant loss and puts the engine into a reduced-power mode to limit damage and fire risk, plus inspection and repair where required.
- A combustion leak test at the coolant reservoir is the definitive shop test — it detects exhaust gases in the coolant.
If you are shopping and the vehicle has the 1.5L, ask for documentation that the recall was performed. If the seller cannot produce it, a Ford dealer will tell you the status from the VIN in a phone call.
Parts involved
What a shop will be inspecting or replacing on this job.
- 1.5L EcoBoost cylinder head
- Engine coolant jacket
- Powertrain control module software
- Cylinder and piston (secondary damage)
The fix and what it costs
Have the recall performed at a Ford dealer at no charge. Where damage has already occurred, the repair is a cylinder head or long block replacement, which Ford has covered under the campaign in many cases.
- Typical repair cost
- $0–$7,000 free under recall; engine replacement otherwise
- Usually reported at
- Any mileage — reported from under 20,000 miles

The problem in general
How this fault behaves across vehicles, with full diagnostic steps.
Thin white vapor that clears once the engine warms up is condensation and normal. Thick white smoke that keeps going after the engine is hot is coolant burning in the cylinders.

- 12V Battery Drain and Start-Stop ComplaintsThe vehicle fails to start after sitting, or auto start-stop quits working and a battery message appears. Tied to the AGM battery's state of charge on short-trip use.
- SYNC 3 Freezing and Camera FaultsThe center display locks up or reboots, or the reversing camera shows a black screen while everything else works.
