Coolant is commonly green, orange, pink or yellow, and NAPA describes it as dripping typically from the front of the car. AAA adds the detail that matters most for identification: it has a slimy texture rather than an oily one, and it smells faintly sweet. Colour alone is genuinely unreliable, because transmission fluid and power steering fluid occupy the same pink-red-orange band.
A sweet smell after you shut the engine off
AAA lists "an odd, sweet smell after shutting off your engine" as one of the three signs it publishes. This is one of the more reliable indicators because the smell is distinctive and few other automotive fluids produce it.
The coolant reservoir keeps needing topping up
Coolant is not consumed in normal operation. A sealed system that is losing level is losing it somewhere. If you are topping up repeatedly and cannot find a puddle, that does not mean there is no leak — it may be evaporating off a hot surface, or going internally. Temperature gauge reading higher than usual, or an over-temp warning
AAA describes the engine seeming "hotter than usual." This is the symptom that converts a leak from an inconvenience into a stop-driving situation. Treat a rising gauge as the instruction to pull over, not as something to monitor while continuing.
Steam from under the hood
Coolant hitting a hot surface flashes to steam. Honda's owner documentation carries an explicit personal-injury warning about this: "Steam and spray from an overheated engine can seriously scald you. Do not open the hood if steam is coming out." This is the single most under-reported safety point in the topic.
No heat from the vents
Cabin heat comes from the heater core, which is fed by the cooling system. If the coolant level has dropped far enough, the heater core stops getting hot coolant and the vents blow cold. It is a useful early indicator because it appears before the gauge moves on some vehicles.
Wet passenger carpet or persistently foggy windows
The heater core sits inside the dashboard. When it leaks, coolant ends up on the passenger floor and the windows fog with an oily film that wipes but returns. There will often be no puddle under the car at all.
Milky or creamy engine oil on the dipstick
This changes the diagnosis entirely. Milky oil means coolant is mixing with oil inside the engine — an internal leak, typically a head gasket or a cracked head or block. Stop and read white smoke from exhaust instead of chasing external leak points.

Very common

How to spot it
Squeeze the hoses when the engine is cold. A healthy hose is firm and springy. A hose that feels mushy, crunchy or that has a swollen section near a clamp is on its way out. Look for a dried crusty trail below the clamp.

Radiator
Common
The radiator sits at the very front of the car, which is where the road debris is. Stones puncture the core, and the plastic end tanks used on most modern radiators crack with age where they crimp to the aluminium core. CRC lists a faulty radiator among its causes.
How to spot it
Wet or stained fins, a crusty deposit trail down the face of the core, or a visible crack along the seam where the plastic tank meets the metal.

Water pump
Common
The water pump has a shaft seal and a deliberate weep hole beneath it. When the seal wears, coolant exits through that weep hole — which is by design, so that the failure announces itself rather than destroying the bearing silently. CRC lists a failing water pump among its causes.
How to spot it
A drip or crusty deposit from a single small hole on the underside of the pump housing, often accompanied by a bearing whine that changes with engine speed.

Common
CRC lists thermostat housing and gasket issues among the causes. Many modern housings are plastic and warp or crack with heat cycling. There is a well-documented manufacturing example: Ford issued a special service message covering 2021–2022 F-150 with the 3.5L EcoBoost and 2021–2022 Expedition and Navigator, stating those vehicles "may experience a coolant leak at the thermostat housing" due to an incomplete weld on the housing.

Occasional
CRC treats internal leaks as a separate category, and rightly so, because nothing about the external diagnosis applies. The coolant is going into the cylinders or into the oil rather than out of the engine. Ford documented one significant population in technical service bulletin 19-2139: 2014–2019 Fusion and 2017–2019 Escape with the 1.5L EcoBoost may show "low coolant level, white exhaust smoke and/or runs rough condition," and the bulletin states this "may be due to coolant intrusion into the cylinder." This is a service bulletin, not a recall — the distinction is frequently misreported.
How to spot it
Milky oil on the dipstick or under the oil filler cap, persistent white smoke from the tailpipe, bubbling in the coolant reservoir, or coolant loss with no external evidence anywhere.

Cracked engine block heater
Rare
Almost nobody covers this, and it is the one cause on this list that carries a fire consequence rather than an overheating one. NHTSA recall campaigns 26V011000 and 25V685000 cover a wide range of Ford vehicles where "the engine block heater may crack and develop a coolant leak, causing it to short circuit when the block heater is plugged in," with the stated consequence that "an electrical short circuit can increase the risk of a fire." Relevant only to vehicles fitted with a block heater, which is a cold-climate option.

Coolant loss on a vehicle equipped with a block heater, particularly if it appears seasonally with plug-in use.

Do not open a hot, pressurised system
Before anything else. CRC states plainly: "be sure to never open a hot, pressurized system when doing the inspection or pressure testing." Honda's owner documentation adds the corresponding warning about the hood itself — do not open it if steam is coming out, because "steam and spray from an overheated engine can seriously scald you." Let the engine cool fully. This is not a formality; it is the most common way people get hurt working on this problem.

Confirm it is actually coolant
A large share of "my car is leaking" panic is plain water from the air conditioning. AAA describes A/C condensate as "colorless and odorless" and typically found "on the front on the passenger side" — and it is completely normal. Read the level on a cold engine, mark it, drive normally, and read it cold again a day or two later. This gives you the one number that actually governs the decision: the rate of loss. A reservoir that drops a few millimetres a week is a very different situation from one that empties between commutes, and no amount of guessing substitutes for measuring it.

Inspect with a flashlight, looking for residue rather than liquid
AutoZone's guidance is to look for signs of dried coolant residue, steam, or small drips around the engine and hoses. Dried residue is more useful than wet coolant because it marks the path over time — a chalky white, green or orange crust traces back to the source even when the leak is not actively dripping. Pressure test the cooling system
This is the step that finds what looking cannot, and it is where most published guides stop short. AutoZone: "To find a hidden coolant leak, perform a coolant pressure test." CRC: "use a pressure tester to identify leaks in less obvious areas." The tester pressurises the cold system and holds it, so a leak that only appears when hot becomes visible with the engine off and safe to inspect. Many parts stores lend the tool. This is the answer to "losing coolant with no visible leak," and almost nothing ranking on the subject covers it.

If it holds pressure but still loses coolant, test for combustion gases
A block tester draws air from the coolant reservoir through a chemical indicator fluid that changes colour in the presence of combustion gases. Gases in the coolant mean cylinder pressure is getting into the cooling system, which points at a head gasket or a cracked head. This is the point at which the diagnosis stops being an owner job and becomes a decision about whether the repair is worth it.

When to see a mechanic

How far can you drive with a coolant leak?
This is the most-asked question on the topic and it is answered badly almost everywhere. Google's own People Also Ask box leads with it. Most pages either dodge it entirely — AAA, Jiffy Lube, CRC and Firestone all decline to answer — or offer a vague "short distance" without quantifying anything.
The reason no authority publishes a distance is that the distance genuinely does not exist as a fixed quantity. It depends on the rate of loss and the location of the leak, and neither is knowable from the outside. A weeping hose clamp and a split radiator hose are both "a coolant leak" and they are separated by a factor of hundreds in how long you have.
What we can tell you instead: the stop condition
The only reliable real-time instrument you have is the temperature gauge, and the correct framing is a condition rather than a distance. Honda's owner documentation for the 2024 CR-V displays the message "Engine temperature too hot. Do not drive. Allow engine to cool." and warns that continuing to drive with that message showing may damage the engine. That is a manufacturer telling you the stop condition in its own words.
Stop immediately if the temperature gauge climbs above normal, an over-temperature message appears, or steam comes from under the hood.

If the leak is minor, the temperature is normal and a shop is close, topping up the coolant and driving a short distance while watching the gauge is what the more careful published sources describe. Don Lee's Tire frames it exactly that way — and adds that if you are unsure how serious it is, or the temperature starts to climb, stop and call for assistance.
If you do not know how bad it is, treat it as bad. That is the honest position and it is the one the sources support.
The reason to be careful rather than relaxed is what happens when you get it wrong. AAA states that failure to keep the engine within a safe operating temperature "can result in catastrophic damage that's impossible to repair." There is also a documented case where the failure chain runs further than overheating: NHTSA recall 17V209000 covers 1.6L GTDI Ford engines where, if the vehicle "is started and driven with an insufficient level of coolant," the cylinder head may overheat, crack and leak oil — and "the oil may contact a hot engine or exhaust component, increasing the risk of a fire." A coolant leak is not always only a coolant problem.

Two entries deserve emphasis. A/C condensate is normal — a car that has been running the air conditioning will drip clear, odourless water from the passenger side, and there is nothing wrong with it. Gasoline is the one that ends the conversation. AAA is unambiguous: you should never drive a car that is leaking gas; call a professional mechanic immediately.
Losing coolant with no visible leak
This is a substantial and largely orphaned question — people search for it in real numbers and the only things serving it are a Reddit thread and an old Q&A post. It also has a genuine diagnostic answer, so here it is.

It is evaporating before it reaches the ground
A small leak onto a hot engine or exhaust component flashes to steam and never forms a puddle. This is why a pressure test on a cold engine is so useful — it makes the leak appear with no heat to hide it.

It is going into the cabin
A leaking heater core drips into the passenger footwell rather than onto the road. Check the carpet under the glovebox for damp, and look for a persistent greasy film on the inside of the windscreen.

It is going into the oil
Pull the dipstick. Milky, creamy oil means coolant and oil are mixing internally. This is a head gasket or a cracked head or block.

It is going into the cylinders and out of the exhaust
Coolant burned in the combustion chamber leaves as white vapour. Ford documented exactly this pattern in service bulletin 19-2139 for the 1.5L EcoBoost — low coolant level with white exhaust smoke and a rough-running condition, attributed to coolant intrusion into the cylinder. The two tests that resolve all four are a cooling system pressure test and a combustion leak test. We also deliberately left some widely repeated claims off this page. NHTSA investigation RQ24008 into Ford 1.5L underhood fires concerns cracked fuel injectors leaking fuel, not coolant, and the two are frequently conflated. These products are heavily marketed and they appear prominently in shopping placements when you search for this problem. That prominence is advertising, not endorsement.
No independent source in the material we examined recommends a sealant as a repair. They exist, some people use them to get a car to a shop, and the mechanism — circulating particles that swell on contact with air at a leak point — is the same mechanism that can block the narrow passages in a heater core or radiator that you actually want open. Three checks separate them. First, look at the oil: milky or creamy oil on the dipstick or under the filler cap means coolant and oil are mixing internally, which an external leak cannot do. Second, look at the tailpipe: persistent white smoke that does not clear as the engine warms means coolant is being burned in the cylinders. Third, pressure test the system: an internal leak often will not hold pressure at all, and a combustion leak tester will show combustion gases present in the coolant. ▸Why would a car suddenly start leaking coolant?
Sudden onset usually means something let go rather than something wore out gradually. A hose splitting, a clamp failing, or a plastic expansion tank cracking will all produce a large loss over a short time, and they are the most likely explanations for a puddle that appeared overnight when there was nothing yesterday. Age and heat cycling do the underlying damage, but the failure itself is abrupt. Gradual loss with no visible puddle points in a different direction — evaporation off a hot surface, a heater core leaking into the cabin, or an internal leak. Either way, coolant is not consumed in normal operation, so a level that drops is a level that is going somewhere.
▸Is the puddle under my car definitely coolant?
Often it is not. The most common harmless explanation is air conditioning condensate, which AAA describes as colourless and odourless and typically found at the front on the passenger side — that is completely normal on any car that has been running the A/C. Coolant is slimy to the touch and smells faintly sweet; condensate is watery and smells of nothing. Colour by itself is unreliable because coolant, transmission fluid and power steering fluid all overlap in the pink and red range. ▸Can I just keep topping up the coolant?
You can keep a car running that way for a while, and plenty of people do, but it is worth being clear about what you are choosing. Topping up manages the symptom and does nothing about the cause, and the cause tends to get worse rather than better — a weeping hose becomes a split hose, and a small gasket seep becomes a large one. The real risk is that the failure escalates while you are driving rather than while the car is parked, which turns a planned repair into an overheating event. If the loss is slow and you are genuinely monitoring the level rather than remembering to sometimes, topping up while you arrange a repair is reasonable. Treating it as the permanent plan is not.
