Car Shakes When Idling

Shaking that appears at a stop and smooths out on the move usually traces to a misfire, a vacuum leak, a failed motor mount, or the idle-control system losing its target — four different repairs at four different price points.

Symptoms you might notice

  • Shakes in Park or Neutral, smooths out in Drive

    The engine is under no load in Park and Neutral, so an unbalanced pulse is unhidden. Drive puts a load on the engine that damps the shake. This pattern is normal for a rough-running engine.

  • Worse in Drive with your foot on the brake

    Drive loads the engine even at idle, and that extra load reveals cylinder problems that Neutral hides. Points at a misfire or a broken transmission mount rather than a vacuum leak.

  • Only shakes with the AC on

    The compressor adds several horsepower of drag, and a marginal engine cannot hold the idle. This usually means the idle-air-control system is not compensating — or the AC compressor itself is dragging.

  • RPM needle rocks between 500 and 900

    A hunting idle points at the ECU chasing a target it cannot hold, which is a strong signal for a vacuum leak or a dirty throttle body. Steady low RPM with vibration is more often a misfire or a mount.

  • Check engine light on or flashing

    Present in most misfire cases and any code-triggering fault. A flashing light means an active misfire is dumping unburned fuel into the exhaust — stop driving and address it before the catalytic converter is damaged.

  • Smooth when cold, rough once warmed up

    The cold-start enrichment on modern engines masks small vacuum leaks and marginal cylinders. When the ECU pulls the enrichment out at operating temperature, the problem appears.

  • Only shakes for the first 10 to 30 seconds after start

    The opposite pattern. Usually a cold-start-enrichment issue, a stuck open injector or a failing engine coolant temperature sensor giving the ECU wrong data.

What causes it

  1. Cylinder misfire (ignition or fuel)

    Very common

    One cylinder is not producing its share of power — a fouled spark plug, a failed ignition coil, a cracked coil boot, a clogged injector or a stuck open injector. The engine shakes because it is now firing three or five or seven times per revolution instead of four or six or eight, and the missing pulse is a hole in the rotation.

    How to spot it

    A P0300 random misfire or a cylinder-specific code (P0301–P0308). A flashing check-engine light means an active misfire severe enough to damage the catalyst.

    The fix

    Diagnose the affected cylinder from the code, then replace the plug, coil or injector as indicated. If a coil moved to a good cylinder makes the misfire follow, the coil is at fault.

  2. Vacuum leak (intake gasket, PCV hose, brake booster hose)

    Very common

    Modern engines meter incoming air precisely and add fuel in a defined ratio. A cracked intake boot, torn PCV hose or leaking gasket lets air in that the mass-airflow sensor never measured, so the mixture leans out. At idle — when the air draw is smallest — an unmetered leak is proportionally largest, which is exactly why vacuum leaks show up at idle first.

    How to spot it

    A hunting idle that rises and falls between 500 and 1,000 RPM, sometimes with a hiss under the hood. Codes P0171 or P0174 (system too lean) are common.

    Locate the leak with propane, smoke or a spray of carb cleaner around suspect joints — a change in idle when the spray hits the leak points at it. Replace the cracked hose, boot or gasket.

  3. Broken or collapsed engine or transmission mount

    Common

    The engine's normal vibration is absorbed by rubber mounts. When a mount cracks, delaminates or (on hydraulic mounts) leaks its fluid, that vibration is transmitted directly to the chassis and you feel it as a shake. It appears at idle because that is when the vibration frequency matches the resonance of the unmounted structure.

    How to spot it

    The shake changes noticeably between Park and Drive, or a clunk is felt when shifting between them. A visual inspection often shows a mount with a torn rubber isolator or an obviously sagging engine.

    Replace the failed mount. On some vehicles the engine has to be supported and lifted slightly to access the mount, which is what makes mount jobs disproportionately expensive.

  4. Dirty throttle body or failed idle-air-control valve

    Common

    The throttle body sets the air the engine gets at idle by controlling a small bypass around the closed throttle plate — on newer cars, by opening the drive-by-wire throttle slightly. Carbon buildup or a failed IAC valve leaves the ECU unable to set the idle where it wants, so the engine hunts or drops to a stall.

    How to spot it

    Idle sinks to near-stall then recovers, especially with the AC on or during cold starts. Cleaning the throttle body often produces an immediate change in behavior.

    The fix

    Clean the throttle body with a manufacturer-approved cleaner and complete the ECU relearn procedure. Replace the IAC valve if the drive-by-wire throttle is failing to hold position.

  5. Fuel delivery problem (pressure, filter, pump)

    Occasional

    A failing fuel pump, a clogged filter or a leaking fuel pressure regulator delivers less fuel than the ECU commands, and the mixture leans out. Idle is the first place it shows because the volumetric demand is small and any pressure loss is amplified as a percentage of the total flow.

    How to spot it

    The shake gets worse under load, the engine may stall or hesitate on acceleration, and a fuel-trim scan shows the long-term trim pulling large positive values (adding fuel to compensate).

    Test fuel pressure at the rail with a gauge — spec is usually 40 to 65 psi depending on the system. Replace the pump, filter or regulator as indicated.

  6. EGR valve stuck open

    Occasional

    The exhaust gas recirculation valve dilutes the intake charge with cool exhaust to reduce NOx emissions. Under normal operation it is closed at idle. If it sticks open — carbon buildup is the usual cause — the engine idles on a mixture that is partly exhaust, and the resulting rough idle is severe.

    How to spot it

    Rough idle immediately after start that improves under acceleration, sometimes with an EGR-related code (P0401, P0402, P0404).

    Clean or replace the EGR valve. On some vehicles the EGR passages themselves are carbonized and require chemical or manual cleaning.

  7. Charging system or battery fault affecting idle

    Occasional

    A weak battery or a failing alternator forces the electrical accessories to draw harder from what the engine can provide at idle, and the ECU may throw an odd mixture correction. This is less common than the other causes but shows up frequently enough to warrant a five-minute voltmeter check.

    How to spot it

    Idle shake correlates with electrical load — headlights on, rear defroster on, wipers on. A battery voltmeter reading below 12.4 V with the engine off, or below 13.5 V with the engine running, is diagnostic.

How to diagnose it

  1. Note when the shaking appears

    Park with your foot off everything — does it shake? Now Drive with your foot on the brake — does it get worse or smooth out? Turn on the AC — does the RPM sag? Watch the tachometer — is it steady or hunting? Ninety seconds of observation cuts the possibility space in half.

    Result: Same in Park and Drive with a steady RPM points at a misfire or a mount; hunting RPM points at a vacuum leak or throttle body; worse with the AC on points at idle control.

  2. Check for stored codes

    A $20 scanner reads the check-engine codes in under a minute. A P0300 or cylinder-specific misfire code (P0301–P0308) is diagnostic. P0171 or P0174 (system too lean) points at a vacuum leak or fuel delivery. Absence of codes does not rule anything out — cheap scanners miss pending codes.

    Result: A stored misfire code identifies the affected cylinder directly and reduces the diagnosis to that one cylinder.

  3. Swap suspect coils or plugs between cylinders

    If a misfire code names cylinder 3, move the cylinder-3 coil to cylinder 1 and vice versa. Clear the code and drive. If the misfire follows the coil to cylinder 1, the coil is bad. If it stays on cylinder 3, the coil is fine and the plug or injector is the suspect.

    Result: Isolates whether the fault travels with the coil, the plug or stays with the cylinder.

  4. Inspect visible vacuum lines and intake components

    With the engine idling, look and listen. Cracked rubber intake tubes, a torn PCV hose or a disconnected brake-booster line will often be obvious. Small leaks can be located by spraying carb cleaner around suspect joints — an audible change in idle when the cleaner reaches the leak identifies it.

    Result: Confirms or rules out visible vacuum leaks in five minutes.

  5. Check engine mounts by shifting between gears

    With the parking brake firmly set and one foot on the brake, shift slowly between Park, Reverse and Drive. A clunk or a large lurch each time the transmission engages a gear points at a failed engine or transmission mount. A visual inspection under the hood then confirms which one.

    Result: Reproduces mount failure symptoms in a way vacuum leaks and misfires cannot mimic.

  6. Read the fuel trims on a scan tool

    Long-term fuel trim values (LTFT) tell the ECU story. Values within ±5% are normal. Values above +10% mean the ECU has been adding fuel — a lean condition, usually a vacuum leak or low fuel pressure. Values below −10% mean it has been pulling fuel — usually a leaking injector or a stuck open EGR.

    Result: Turns a hunting idle into a specific direction — lean or rich — that halves the possibility space again.

  7. Measure battery and charging voltage

    Battery voltage engine off should read 12.4 to 12.8 V; engine running should read 13.7 to 14.7 V. Below either range and the electrical system is affecting idle. Above 14.8 V and the alternator is overcharging, which produces its own symptoms.

Spark plug and coil replacement on the affected cylinder

The default fix for a coded misfire on a modern engine. Replace the plug on the affected cylinder at minimum. Replace the coil if the swap test confirmed it, or preventively on any engine past 100,000 miles.

The range is intentionally wide because these are five different problems. A cleaned throttle body costs less than a full tank of fuel; a full fuel-pump replacement costs more than most owners expect. The diagnosis pays for itself by pointing at the right one of them.

When to see a mechanic

  • The check engine light is flashing rather than steady — an active misfire dumping raw fuel into the exhaust will damage the catalytic converter within about 30 minutes of driving.
  • The engine actually stalls at idle or nearly stalls, especially in traffic.
  • The shake is accompanied by a burning smell or visible smoke.
  • Coolant loss, oil loss or white exhaust smoke accompany the rough idle — the diagnosis moves toward a coolant intrusion problem the DIY tests cannot safely resolve.
  • You have replaced the obvious parts (plugs, coils, air filter) and the shake remains — the fault is in a system that needs live scan data to diagnose.

What the modifiers tell you

The most useful diagnostic information for a shaking-at-idle problem is not what the car does — it is what changes the car's behavior. Three cheap observations narrow the possibility space more than most scanner data.

Why misfire is the first thing to check

A cylinder misfire is the most common cause of a shaking idle by a wide margin — likely more than half of all cases. There is a mechanical reason: modern four- and six-cylinder engines run close to the edge of smooth operation at idle already, and dropping one cylinder from the rotation removes a large fraction of the total combustion pulses.

On a four-cylinder engine at 700 RPM, the engine produces about 23 combustion pulses per second across all cylinders. A single-cylinder misfire drops that to 17, and the missing pulses land in a repeating pattern that your body registers as a shake. The engine tries to compensate by increasing fuel to the working cylinders, which makes the pulses on those cylinders slightly stronger — and even more felt.

The corollary is that catching misfires early is cheap and letting them run is expensive. A single failing coil at $40 caught with a P0301 code becomes $1,500 in catalytic converter damage if the misfire is left to dump raw fuel through the cat for a few weeks. The P0300 random misfire code covers the case where the ECU cannot pin the misfire to one cylinder — usually multiple cylinders affected or a fault the ECU cannot distinguish.

Finding a vacuum leak without a smoke machine

A shop uses a smoke machine to inject visible smoke into the intake and watch where it emerges. The DIY substitute is nearly as effective for accessible leaks: a short-burst spray of carb cleaner (or an unlit propane torch) directed at suspect gaskets and hoses with the engine idling.

  • Idle rises briefly when spray hits the leak — the extra combustible has been drawn in through the leak, the mixture briefly reaches ideal, and the RPM ticks up.
  • Idle drops or stumbles — the spray displaced air rather than adding fuel. Same information: this joint is leaking.
  • No change — no leak at that joint. Move on.

Why does my car shake only when it is idling and stops when I drive?
Because idle has no load to mask the problem. Every cylinder's combustion pulse is unabsorbed at a stop, so an imbalance shakes the engine hard enough for you to feel it. Under way, engine load damps small imbalances and airflow across the vehicle carries them away. It cannot fix a bad coil, a torn intake boot, a broken mount or a leaking injector, and no additive is a substitute for the diagnosis.
