Car Maintenance Schedule: What Your Manufacturer Actually Says (And Where They Disagree)
There is no single car maintenance schedule. Manufacturers publish intervals for the same service item that differ by four, five and six times over — this page shows the spread instead of averaging it away.

Toyota (Corolla maintenance guide, normal service)
Every 5,000 miles or 6 months
Toyota runs a genuinely short base cycle: an oil and filter change plus a multi-point inspection every 5,000 miles or six months, whichever comes first, with larger items layered on at 15,000, 30,000 and 60,000. This is read from Toyota's published Corolla guide and the specific items differ on other Toyota models — check the guide for your own vehicle rather than assuming it transfers.
Chevrolet (owner maintenance schedule)
Oil Life System, or roughly 7,500 miles if no monitor
Chevrolet's schedule is organised around the Oil Life System rather than fixed mileage, and its larger service groupings are published as mileage bands — a range within which the item is due — not as point intervals. We are not converting those bands into single numbers, because that would misrepresent what the manual says.
Honda (Maintenance Minder)
No fixed mileage interval, 12-month backstop
Honda does not publish a fixed oil change mileage for Maintenance Minder cars at all. The system generates a letter code when service is due, and Honda's guidance is to change the oil at least once every 12 months even if the code has not appeared. Owners looking for a mileage number in a modern Honda manual will not find one.
Ford (Special Operating Conditions)
Separate schedule, shorter intervals
Ford publishes severe-service items in a distinct Special Operating Conditions schedule rather than as a second column beside the normal one, so it is easy to miss. The intervals we cite from it are read from one model-year variant (a 2015 Fusion schedule) and should be treated as model-specific.
Every manufacturer, calendar backstop
12 months on most fluid items
Nearly every schedule pairs a mileage figure with a time figure and says whichever comes first. A low-mileage car is not a low-maintenance car — oil oxidises, brake fluid absorbs moisture and rubber ages on the calendar regardless of the odometer.
Signs you are overdue
- A maintenance reminder, wrench icon, oil life percentage or Maintenance Minder code has appeared on the dash.
- You are holding a service quote and cannot tell which line items your manufacturer actually requires.
- You bought the car used with no service history and need a baseline to restart from.
- You have crossed a major mileage threshold — 30,000, 60,000, 90,000 or 100,000 — and the dealer has sent a service letter.
- Your driving pattern changed: a new short commute, a move to a hot or cold climate, or you started towing.
- It has been more than twelve months since anything was done, whatever the mileage.

Toyota and Lexus
Short base cycle — 5,000 miles or 6 months — with substantial items concentrated at 15,000 and 30,000 mile multiples. Toyota is also unusually conservative about calling for inspection where other sources call for replacement, most visibly on automatic transmission fluid.
Honda and Acura
Maintenance Minder replaces the mileage table entirely. A main code (A or B) tells you what the oil needs; a sub-code number tells you what else is due. Several dealer pages currently ranking in search get the sub-codes wrong, which is worth knowing before you approve a quote built on one.
General Motors (Chevrolet, GMC, Buick, Cadillac)
The Oil Life System drives the oil interval, and the remaining schedule is published in mileage bands rather than points. If a service writer quotes you a precise GM interval for something like a transmission service, ask which page of the manual it comes from.
Ford and Lincoln
The Special Operating Conditions schedule is separate from the normal one rather than a column beside it. If your driving fits it, you are following a different document, not a modified version of the same one.
European makes with long-life schedules
BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen and Audi publish condition-based systems with intervals that can exceed 10,000 miles. These are the schedules most likely to be shortened by an independent shop on wear grounds — that is a defensible opinion, but it is the shop's opinion and not the manufacturer's schedule, and you are entitled to be told which one you are being sold.
There is no such thing as "the" car maintenance schedule
Search for a car maintenance schedule and you will be handed a table. It will look authoritative. It will not tell you whose schedule it is, and that omission is the whole problem, because the manufacturers do not agree with each other and in several cases they are not even close.
Four examples, all read from the manufacturers' own published material rather than from a summary of it:
- Toyota publishes a fixed 5,000-mile or 6-month base cycle on the Corolla guide we read, with a full multi-point inspection at every one of those visits.
- Chevrolet does not publish a fixed oil interval at all for cars with the Oil Life System. It publishes mileage bands for its larger service groups — a window in which an item is due, not a point.
- Honda publishes no fixed oil change mileage whatsoever for Maintenance Minder vehicles. There is a 12-month backstop and there is a dash code, and that is the schedule.
- Ford puts severe-service work in a separate Special Operating Conditions schedule, a physically different document from the one most owners read.
None of this means your car has no schedule. It means your car has its own schedule, it is in your glovebox or behind your VIN on the manufacturer's site, and it is the document your warranty is judged against. Everything below is here to help you read that document and to tell you where the general advice you have been given diverges from it.
Where the 30/60/90 idea actually comes from
Almost every American driver has heard of the 30,000, 60,000 and 90,000-mile services. Service departments quote them as packages, chains advertise them, and it is easy to assume they are a manufacturer standard.
They are not. The 30/60/90 pattern is a retail-service convention. Firestone, CarGurus and Farm Bureau all describe it in those terms — as the way the industry organises and sells maintenance, built on the observation that many manufacturer items happen to fall on 30,000-mile multiples. No major automaker publishes a maintenance schedule structured as three packages at 30k, 60k and 90k.
That distinction matters at the service desk in a specific way. When a package is quoted as one number, the individual items inside it are not visible, and the ones your manufacturer requires sit alongside ones it does not mention. On the Toyota Corolla guide we read, the 30,000-mile service consists of a cabin air filter and the standard inspection — and that is genuinely all that is scheduled at that mileage.

If your car has an oil life monitor, it has already replaced the mileage table
Adaptive maintenance systems are not mileage counters with a nicer interface. They model oil degradation from cold starts, engine load, rpm, operating temperature and running time, which is why two identical cars driven differently will call for service thousands of miles apart. Where one exists, it supersedes the generic interval — including any interval on this page.
Honda's Maintenance Minder is the most structured version and the most misreported. It produces a main code — a letter, describing what the oil needs — and one or more sub-codes, numbers describing everything else that is due at the same visit.

General Motors' Oil Life System works on the same principle without the sub-code structure: it reports a percentage, and Chevrolet's schedule is written around it rather than around a mileage figure. Ford's Intelligent Oil Life Monitor behaves similarly. In all three cases the correct instruction is the same — follow the monitor, and keep the 12-month calendar backstop.
Where the manufacturers disagree, item by item
This is the table this page exists for. Each row is one service item, with the shortest and longest interval we could find published by a manufacturer or a major authoritative source. We are not averaging these. An average of 20,000 and 125,000 miles is a number that describes no car on the road.

Read the table as a warning about generic advice rather than as a schedule. If somebody tells you brake fluid is a two-year item, they are quoting the short end of a range that stretches past 125,000 miles. They may be right about your car. They are not automatically right, and the only way to know is your own manual.
Normal versus severe service, and the number nobody has
Most schedules split into two columns. The severe column is not for abuse — it is for ordinary conditions that happen to be hard on fluids. The definitions are consistent across manufacturers even where the intervals are not:
- Repeated short trips, usually defined as under about five miles, especially in cold weather — the engine never reaches full operating temperature and moisture stays in the oil.
- Extended idling or long stop-and-go driving, where hours accumulate without miles.
- Sustained high ambient temperature, or sustained cold.
- Dusty or gravel roads, or heavy road salt.
- Towing, carrying heavy loads, or roof-mounted cargo.
- Mountainous terrain with sustained braking or climbing.
One practical note: severe service almost never changes what gets done. It changes how often. If you are trying to work out whether a quote is padded, the severe column will not explain an item that does not appear in the book at all.
What maintenance actually costs per year
AAA's Your Driving Costs study is the most useful public benchmark here because it is built from a defined methodology rather than from survey recall. The 2025 edition puts maintenance, repair and tires at 11.04 cents per mile averaged across the vehicle categories it studies.
That converts as simply as it looks, and the conversion is the only arithmetic we are doing to it:
- At 10,000 miles a year
- About $1,100 in maintenance, repair and tires
- At 15,000 miles a year
- About $1,660 in maintenance, repair and tires
- Medium sedan, total annual ownership
- $11,577 per year in AAA's 2025 figures
- Medium sedan, gasoline

How to find the schedule that actually applies to your car
Check the glovebox first
Most cars ship with a separate maintenance guide or warranty and maintenance booklet alongside the owner's manual. This is the primary document and it is the one a warranty claim is assessed against.
If it is missing, use the manufacturer's owner site
Toyota, Honda, Ford, GM, Hyundai, Kia, Subaru, Nissan and the European makes all run owner portals that will return your exact schedule once you enter your VIN. VIN-level lookup is better than model-level, because trim and engine change the answer on several items.
Identify which column you are in
Find the normal and severe columns — or in Ford's case, the separate Special Operating Conditions schedule — and decide which describes your driving before you read any intervals. Reading the wrong column is the most common way to get this wrong.
Note the inspect items separately from the replace items
Go through and mark which lines say inspect, check, or examine, and which say replace or change. This single distinction is what lets you read a service quote critically, and it is where third-party summaries most often diverge from the manufacturer.
Write down the next three thresholds
From your current odometer, list the next three service points and what each one contains. Take that list to the service desk. A quote that matches it needs no discussion; a quote that exceeds it needs an explanation, which a good shop will be happy to give.
