The friction material bonded to the clutch plates wears away with use, exactly like brake pads. Once enough is gone, no amount of hydraulic pressure will make the pack hold. Establish exactly when it slips
Before any tool comes out, pin down the conditions: which gear, what speed, how much throttle, hot or cold, and whether it happens while the transmission is actively shifting or while holding a steady gear. That last distinction matters enormously — a vibration at steady cruise while not shifting is shudder, a different problem with a different repair. Write it down and give it to the shop.
Result: Separates slipping from shudder, and gear-specific wear from a general pressure loss.

Watch the tachometer, not your gut
This turns a subjective feeling into an observable fact. On a road you know, accelerate gently and watch engine RPM against the speedometer. Slipping decouples the two: RPM climbs while speed does not follow. If RPM and speed stay locked together and you are feeling a vibration instead, you are not looking at slipping.

Rule out the engine first
A misfire can feel like a transmission problem to a driver, and it is far cheaper to check. Put the car in Park or Neutral and rev it. Free, and it rules in or out the cheapest cause. On a level surface, at the temperature your manual specifies — many require the engine running and warm, which is different from checking engine oil. Look at three things: level, color (translucent red is healthy, dark brown or black is not) and smell (scorched means the clutches have been overheating). Many newer transmissions are sealed with no dipstick, and on those this step needs a shop.

The transmission control module stores its own codes, and a basic code reader that only pulls generic powertrain codes will miss them. This is where most home diagnosis stops short. Ask for pending and history codes too, not only active ones.

Inspect for leaks and read the pan
What is sitting in the bottom of the transmission pan is genuinely informative. Fine dark powder on the magnet is more or less expected friction wear. Glitter or metal flake means hard parts are failing. A milkshake-like emulsion means coolant has entered through a failed radiator cooler, which is its own emergency.
Result: Grades the internal condition before anyone commits to a teardown.

Line pressure test — the gate
This is the test that decides everything, and it is the one to ask for by name. A gauge is connected to the transmission's pressure tap and pressure is read across operating conditions. Low pressure with slipping points at the pump or pressure control — potentially repairable without a full teardown. Normal pressure with slipping means the hydraulics are doing their job and the friction material has worn out, which means teardown. A shop that quotes you a rebuild off a road test alone has not diagnosed anything.

When to see a mechanic

Why "it only slips a little" is not a wait-and-see condition
An automatic transmission selects gears by hydraulically squeezing stacks of friction plates — and in older designs, bands wrapped around drums — against steel plates. Pressurized fluid supplies the clamping force; bonded friction material supplies the grip. When the clamp holds, engine speed and wheel speed are locked in a fixed ratio. When it does not, the engine-side plates spin faster than the wheel-side plates and the difference becomes heat instead of motion.
It is also why the burnt smell matters so much as a symptom. By the time overheated fluid is noticeable from the driver's seat, the friction surfaces have already been cooked, and the cheap outcomes on this page have usually closed off.
Slipping, shudder or misfire — how to tell them apart
These three feel similar from the driver's seat and cost wildly different amounts to fix. Almost nothing published on this topic states the distinction plainly, so here it is. There are two tests, and between them they separate all three.
Test 1: the Neutral test — is it the engine?
Put the car in Park or Neutral and rev the engine. A misfire is an engine event — a cylinder is not contributing — and it will still be there with the transmission completely unloaded. Neither slipping nor torque converter shudder can manifest with no load going through the driveline, because both are failures of a mechanism that is only doing work under load. If the roughness survives the Neutral test, stop investigating the transmission.
Test 2: the tachometer test — slipping or shudder?
Slipping is by definition a mismatch between engine speed and road speed; that mismatch is the entire failure. Shudder is a vibration occurring at the correct ratio — the converter clutch is grabbing and releasing rapidly, but the transmission is still holding its gear. So: if RPM climbs while speed stays flat, it is slipping. If RPM and speed stay locked together and you feel a rumble, it is shudder.

What a fluid change genuinely can fix
Slipping caused by a low fluid level — straightforwardly yes, once the leak is repaired.
Shudder caused by degraded friction modifiers — yes, and for one documented population of GM eight-speed automatics the manufacturer prescribes a full fluid exchange as the repair. That case is covered on our transmission shudder page.
What it cannot fix
Slipping caused by physically worn clutch friction material. Every source we found agrees, and the reason is not complicated: new fluid cannot replace material that has already worn off the plate. No additive does either.
Can a fluid change cause a failure? Sources disagree, so here is both
The version repeated everywhere online is that worn friction debris suspended in old fluid was providing extra grip, and flushing removes it. We could not source that claim to any authoritative technical publication — only to content sites. It is also mechanically questionable on its face: abrasive debris in a friction system is a wear mechanism, not a design feature.
The trade literature offers a different and better-documented explanation. Writing in GEARS, the Automatic Transmission Rebuilders Association's magazine, Pat Burrow attributes it to detergency: the new fluid's detergents dislodge deposits, and a new-and-used fluid mixture can free material that then interferes with solenoids and valves. The same article notes that shops commonly ask owners to sign a waiver before doing fluid work on a high-mileage transmission, and recommends a middle path — drop and drain the pan, inspect deposits and magnet debris, replace the filter, refill with fresh fluid and make no attempt to drain the converter, recovering roughly half the volume rather than all of it.
Transmission codes and what they actually tell you
P0700
Transmission Control System Malfunction. This is a pointer, not a diagnosis. AutoZone's own documentation describes it as informational — it means the transmission control module has stored a fault and is telling the engine module to turn the light on. Other codes will almost always be present alongside it, and those are the ones that matter. A shop reading only P0700 has not finished scanning.
P0730
Incorrect Gear Ratio — the classic slipping code. Worn friction material lets the transmission report a ratio that does not match the gear it commanded.
P0731–P0736, P0729
Gear-specific ratio codes covering 1st through reverse, with P0729 for 6th gear. A gear-specific code is strong evidence of one particular clutch pack rather than a system-wide pressure loss — which narrows a teardown considerably.
P0741
Torque converter clutch performance or stuck off. Points at the converter rather than the gearbox — see transmission shudder.
P0750-series, P0715, P0720
Solenoid circuit and speed sensor codes. These point away from worn friction material and toward the control and sensing side, which is the cheaper direction.
