Transmission Fluid Change: The Service, Types and Cost
What a drain-and-fill actually replaces, how it differs from a flush, which fluid specification your gearbox needs, and what the job costs.

Conventional automatic, normal service
40,000–60,000 miles
Highway-weighted driving in a moderate climate. Fluid degrades from heat and shear, and steady cruising produces the least of both.
Conventional automatic, severe service
25,000–35,000 miles
Towing, city stop-and-go, mountain grades, or sustained ambient heat. Transmission fluid temperature is the whole story — every 20°F above about 200°F roughly halves fluid life.
CVT (continuously variable transmission)
30,000–50,000 miles
Applies to most Nissan, Subaru, Honda and Toyota CVT applications. The belt or chain rides on a fluid film against the pulleys, so the fluid is a load-bearing component. This is the interval least worth stretching.
Dual-clutch (DCT/DSG)
40,000 miles
Wet-clutch DCTs share fluid with the clutch packs and carry a filter that must be changed with it. Many manufacturers publish this interval explicitly rather than calling it lifetime.
Signs you are overdue
- Fluid on the dipstick is dark brown or black rather than translucent red or amber, or it smells burnt.
- A hesitation of a second or more between selecting Drive and the car actually engaging.
- Shifts that have become harsh, or a flare where engine rpm rises briefly between gears.
- Shuddering at light throttle around 35 to 50 mph, which is the classic torque converter lockup shudder from degraded fluid.
- On a CVT, a droning or whining that rises with load, or a lurch when accelerating from a stop.
- Reddish fluid spots under the middle of the car, meaning a leak is dropping the level as well as the condition.

Nissan and Subaru CVTs
Both makes have well-documented CVT durability histories, and both benefit measurably from fluid service on the shorter end of the range. Nissan NS-2 and NS-3 fluids are specific to their applications and cost $25 to $40 a quart.
Toyota Camry and most modern Toyotas
Sealed with no dipstick and a temperature-based fill procedure. Toyota WS fluid only. The published schedule calls it lifetime under normal use, with a severe-service interval listed for towing.
Ford F-150 10R80 and Chevrolet Silverado 1500
Truck transmissions used for towing accumulate heat quickly. Ford's severe-service schedule lists fluid service around 60,000 miles, and towing owners commonly halve that. An auxiliary cooler is worth more than any fluid choice.
BMW 3 Series with ZF 8-speed
BMW calls this a lifetime fill. The ZF unit itself is durable, but a fluid and pan-filter service around 60,000 to 80,000 miles is close to universal advice among independent specialists who work on them.
What "lifetime fluid" does and does not mean
The common interpretation among mechanics — repeated widely enough that Google's own answer states it — is that lifetime means the powertrain warranty period, commonly 60,000 to 100,000 miles. We went looking for a manufacturer document that defines the term in miles or years and could not find one. Toyota's own public page hedges, saying only that vehicles with lifetime fluid require less-frequent changes unless a problem crops up. So treat the warranty-period reading as a widely held industry interpretation rather than a manufacturer statement, because that is what it is.
What is not in dispute is the narrower point: a fill specified for life is not a claim that the fluid remains serviceable at 180,000 miles, and no manufacturer says it is.
Transmission fluid does three jobs — it transmits hydraulic pressure, it provides the friction characteristics the clutch packs are designed around, and it carries heat away. All three degrade. Friction modifiers shear down, oxidation raises viscosity and produces varnish that sticks valve-body spools, and clutch material accumulates as suspended debris.
Drain and fill, exchange, or flush
Three different services get quoted under similar names, and they replace very different fractions of the fluid. Most automatics hold 9 to 14 quarts total, but only 4 to 6 quarts live in the pan — the rest sits in the torque converter and cooler lines.

For a car with unknown history, two drain-and-fills a thousand miles apart is the conservative approach: you dilute the old fluid twice without ever disturbing what has settled. For a car with documented service, a cooler-line exchange is the efficient choice. Compare against what this service should cost.
