Front and rear tires wear at different rates and in different shapes — on a front-wheel-drive car the fronts handle steering, most of the braking and all of the power, so they can be finished while the rears still look new. When it is actually due

Intervals move with how you drive, not just how far.

  • Front-wheel drive

    5,000–7,500 miles

    The most uneven wear of any layout, because the front axle steers, drives and does 70-plus percent of the braking. Forward-cross pattern: fronts go straight back, rears cross to the front.

  • Rear-wheel drive and four-wheel drive

    5,000–8,000 miles

    Rearward-cross pattern: rears go straight forward, fronts cross to the back. Wear is more even to begin with, so the interval can run to the top of the range.

  • All-wheel drive

    5,000–6,000 miles

    The tightest interval, and for a mechanical reason rather than an economic one. AWD systems tolerate very little difference in rolling circumference between axles; mismatched tread depth makes the center differential or coupling work continuously.

  • Directional or staggered-size tires

    5,000–7,500 miles

    Directional tires rotate front-to-back on the same side only. Staggered setups with wider rear tires cannot be rotated between axles at all unless the tires are dismounted and reversed on the rims.

Signs you are overdue

  • Tread depth measured with a gauge differs by more than about 2/32 inch between front and rear.
  • A rhythmic hum or growl at 40 to 60 mph that changes pitch when you sway the car gently between lanes.
  • Feathering you can feel — run a palm across the tread and it is smooth one direction, saw-toothed the other.
  • Cupping or scalloped dips around the tread, which usually means worn shocks or struts as well as missed rotations.
  • It has been more than 8,000 miles or six months since the last documented rotation.
  • The tire pressure light keeps appearing on the same corner, hinting at a slow leak that also accelerates wear.

Doing it yourself

Doable with a floor jack, four jack stands and a torque wrench. The parts that get people hurt or cost them money: never work under a car supported only by the scissor jack from the trunk, and always chock the wheels that stay on the ground. Lug nuts must be torqued to the manufacturer's spec in a star pattern, typically 80 to 100 ft-lb on passenger cars and 130 to 150 on half-ton trucks — an impact gun run out of sequence distorts the rotor and produces exactly the shudder under braking you were not looking for. Re-torque after about 50 miles. Cars with TPMS sensors bound to specific positions may need a relearn procedure so the dash shows the right corner; on many vehicles it happens automatically after a short drive. If your car has staggered or directional tires, confirm the correct pattern before you start rather than after.

What changes by vehicle

  • Subaru and other AWD vehicles

    Subaru specifically warns that a tread depth difference beyond about 2/32 inch across the set can damage the center differential. Replacing a single damaged tire on high-mileage AWD often means shaving the new tire to match or buying all four.

  • Ford F-150 and Chevrolet Silverado 1500

    Higher lug torque, heavier wheels, and a full-size spare that on some trucks is part of a five-tire rotation. Including the spare spreads wear across five tires but requires the spare to be the same size and type.

  • BMW 3 Series with staggered wheels

    Wider rear tires than front means no cross-rotation is possible. Owners of staggered cars simply replace in pairs, and rear tires typically last half as long as fronts.

  • Hyundai Tucson, Toyota Camry, Honda Civic

    Conventional same-size non-directional tires on all four corners, so any standard pattern works. These are the vehicles where diligent rotation shows the clearest return in tire life.

Which pattern your car needs

The pattern exists to move each tire into a position that wears it differently from where it has been. Crossing a tire to the opposite side reverses the direction it rolls, which counteracts the feathering that steering and camber produce.

Reading tire wear as a diagnostic

Uneven wear is information about the rest of the car. Rotation redistributes wear; it does not fix the cause. If a pattern keeps reappearing after rotation, something mechanical is producing it.

  • Both outer edges worn, center fine — chronic underinflation. Check pressures monthly, cold, against the door jamb sticker rather than the sidewall.
  • Center strip worn, edges fine — overinflation. Common when someone inflates to the maximum pressure printed on the tire.
  • One inside edge worn smooth — negative camber or toe out of spec. Needs an alignment; rotation just moves the problem.
  • Saw-tooth feathering across the tread — toe misalignment, and it is audible as a growl before it is visible.
  • Cupping or scalloped dips — worn struts or shocks letting the tire bounce. Replacing tires without replacing the dampers repeats the pattern.
  • One tire wearing far faster than its three siblings — a bent wheel, a seized brake caliper, or a damaged suspension component at that corner.

Tread depth of 2/32 inch is the legal minimum in most US states and the point at which the wear bars sit flush with the tread. Wet-weather stopping distance degrades well before that — many safety recommendations put the practical replacement point nearer 4/32 inch, and in snow closer to 6/32.

How often should tires be rotated?
Every 5,000 to 8,000 miles, or roughly every oil change on a modern synthetic interval. All-wheel drive vehicles should stay at the short end because AWD drivetrains are sensitive to tread depth differences between axles.
What happens if I never rotate my tires?
The drive and steering axle wears out first while the other pair still has 60 percent of its tread. You end up replacing tires in pairs at staggered intervals and getting roughly 25 to 30 percent fewer total miles from the money you spent. Some tire warranties also require documented rotations for a tread-life claim.
Does rotating tires require a balance too?
Not routinely. Balance addresses weight distribution and only needs attention if you feel a vibration at a specific speed range. A rotation moves an existing imbalance to a different corner, which is why a wheel that was fine at the rear can produce steering wheel shake once it moves to the front — that is a balance job, not a rotation problem.
Can I rotate tires with a TPMS system?
Yes. Most vehicles since about 2015 relearn sensor positions automatically within a few minutes of driving. Some require a relearn with a TPMS tool or a specific ignition sequence. If a dash message shows the wrong corner after a rotation, that is a relearn issue rather than a fault.
Should I include the spare in the rotation?
Only if it is a full-size matching tire on a matching wheel, which is rare outside pickups. A five-tire rotation spreads wear across five tires and keeps the spare from aging out unused. A temporary compact spare is never part of a rotation.
