Repair Costs

What common repairs actually cost, and how to read the quote you were just handed.

Almost every repair quote breaks into two numbers: parts and labor. Labor is the hours a published time guide assigns to the job multiplied by the shop's posted rate, which in 2026 runs roughly $90 to $220 an hour at independent shops and $150 to $290 at dealers in major metros. If a quote does not separate those two figures, ask for it in writing — that single request changes what you are able to compare.

Ranges on this site are national. A given repair in Manhattan, San Francisco or Boston lands near the top; the same repair in rural Ohio or Alabama lands near the bottom, and the gap is mostly labor rate rather than parts. Parts pricing varies on a different axis: OEM, aftermarket and remanufactured can differ by a factor of three for identical function.

Repair Costs estimates

Cost figures are national US estimates for planning purposes. Actual pricing varies with your vehicle, engine, location, shop labor rate, and whether OEM or aftermarket parts are used. Always get a written quote before authorizing work.
