How Often Should You Change Transmission Fluid?

Toyota's own maintenance guide schedules no transmission fluid replacement at any mileage under normal driving. Nissan schedules one at 60,000 miles. Both are manufacturer documents, and neither is wrong.

This is the maintenance question with the widest genuine disagreement of any on your car, and the gap is not a factor of two — it is never versus eight times over the life of the vehicle. Toyota's published 2023 Camry maintenance guide lists the transmission under inspect at 30,000, 60,000, 90,000 and 120,000 miles and schedules a replacement only under special operating conditions. Nissan's official schedule tool gives the 2021 Altima's CVT fluid a replacement at 60,000 miles or 72 months under standard conditions. Honda publishes no mileage at all and computes the interval from how the car is actually driven. An independent transmission specialist recommends every 30,000 to 40,000 miles. The one thing every technical source agrees on is that heat, not mileage, degrades the fluid — which means the severe-service column matters far more than the number in it.

    No replacement scheduled at any mileage

    The transmission appears only in the inspect list at 30,000, 60,000, 90,000 and 120,000 miles — cooler hoses, connections, and a check for leakage. Confirmed identical in the 2023 Corolla, Corolla Cross and Tacoma guides. These are model-year 2023 documents; Toyota's site no longer hosts the 2019 or 2021 guides.

    Replace at 60,000 and 120,000 miles

    The stated triggers are towing, using a car-top carrier, heavy vehicle loading, and extensive idling or low-speed driving over long distances such as police, taxi or door-to-door delivery use. Read that list carefully — see the section below on who is actually in it.

  • Nissan, 2021 Altima 2.5L CVT, standard conditions

    Inspect every 10,000 miles or 12 months; replace every 60,000 miles or 72 months

    From Nissan's own published per-model schedule tool. The 2.0L Turbo differs: inspect every 7,500 miles or 12 months, replace every 60,000 miles or 96 months. This is the cleanest counterexample to Toyota in the whole topic.

  • Honda, all models with Maintenance Minder

    No fixed mileage; the system calls it as Code 3

    Honda computes the interval from operating conditions rather than publishing a table, so there is genuinely no number to look up. In practice Code 3 tends to appear somewhere in the 30,000 to 60,000 mile range depending on use.

  • Hyundai, Tucson owner's manual (2022–2026 edition)

    Normal use: not even a level check. Severe use: per the severe-conditions schedule.

    The manual states the fluid level does not need to be checked under normal usage conditions. Structurally the same position as Toyota. Note this is the 2022–2026 manual and does not establish what the 2021 book says.

Signs you are overdue

  • Fluid that is dark brown or black rather than translucent red, combined with age or mileage — colour alone is not enough, see the caution below.
  • A burnt smell on the dipstick or from the fluid on a rag.
  • Engagement into drive or reverse that is slightly delayed or firmer than it used to be, consistently rather than progressively.
  • You tow, carry a roof box, run heavily loaded, or spend most of your driving idling and crawling in traffic — in which case your manufacturer's severe-service column applies to you regardless of symptoms.
  • You bought the car used with no service history and it is past 60,000 miles.

Doing it yourself

Two things decide whether this is a driveway job on your car. First, whether the pan is serviceable and whether there is a dipstick — a growing number of transmissions are sealed with no dipstick, and filling them correctly requires bringing the unit to a specified fluid temperature and checking at a level plug, which needs a scan tool to read transmission temperature. Second, the fluid specification, which is not negotiable and matters more than the timing. Toyota WS, Honda DW-1 for conventional automatics, Honda HCF-2 for CVTs, ATF+4 for Stellantis, Dexron VI for GM, Mercon LV for Ford. These are not interchangeable, and putting conventional ATF into a CVT is not a scheduling mistake — it is a mechanism-level error, because CVT fluid is engineered for high metal-to-metal traction at the belt and pulley while conventional ATF is engineered for the opposite. ZF's own service document for its transmissions states it plainly: use only the specified fluid, and do not add any further additives because they alter the chemical composition of the oil. Where the generic advice stops applying.

  • Toyota and Lexus

    The 2023 Camry, Corolla, Corolla Cross and Tacoma guides all schedule transmission fluid replacement only under special operating conditions, at 60,000 and 120,000 miles. Under normal service the fluid is inspected, not replaced. Note this is what those specific model-year guides say, not a statement about every Toyota ever built.

  • Nissan CVT models

    The 2021 Altima is the one vehicle in our research where a manufacturer's own published tool gives a normal-conditions replacement interval: 60,000 miles or 72 months for the 2.5L. Nissan runs a public per-model-year schedule lookup, which is a better source than any article about Nissan, including this one.

  • Honda and Acura

    There is no mileage table to find. Maintenance Minder Code 3 is the transmission fluid item and the algorithm decides when it appears. Also relevant: American Honda's own definition of a flush is draining and filling with a drive cycle three times, not a machine exchange.

  • Anything described as having lifetime fluid

    No manufacturer document we retrieved defines lifetime in miles or years. Toyota's public page hedges it, saying such vehicles require less-frequent changes unless a problem crops up. The widely repeated interpretation that lifetime means the warranty period is an inference by mechanics, not a manufacturer statement, and we could not source it to one.

  • CVTs generally

    Every blog on this subject says CVTs need fluid changed more often. Toyota's own guides give their CVT models the same 60,000 and 120,000 mile severe-service schedule as their conventional automatics. We are not publishing the CVT rule as a general truth because the manufacturer documents we can read do not support it.

Neither Toyota nor Nissan is wrong. They are different engineering and warranty judgements about the same class of vehicle, and the fact that two competent manufacturers land this far apart is the most useful thing you can know about the question.

Heat is what degrades the fluid, not distance

The best evidence on this comes from ZF, the company that builds the eight-speed automatic that several manufacturers describe as a lifetime fill. Their own service documentation names the degradation driver directly, and it is not the odometer: at very high operating temperatures the oil ages faster than under normal conditions, with the examples given as many trips at high speeds, many trips towing a trailer, and sporty driving.

That single fact reframes the whole question. Two cars at 60,000 miles have not had the same fluid life if one towed a boat and the other commuted on flat highway. It also means the severe-service column is not a footnote for unusual owners — it is the column that describes what actually happened to your fluid.

So the honest answer to how often is: read your own severe-service definition first, decide truthfully which column you are in, and only then look at the number. Getting the column right matters more than getting the mileage right.

Change, flush, drain-and-fill — and the high-mileage warning

These words describe genuinely different jobs that replace genuinely different amounts of fluid, and the volumetrics are sourced from Toyota's own page.

  • Drain-and-fill replaces 30 to 40 percent of the fluid, per Toyota. Kelley Blue Book puts it at possibly as little as 30 percent. The rest stays in the torque converter and cooler lines.
  • Flush replaces nearly 100 percent, per Toyota, using a machine that pushes new fluid through while extracting old.
  • Honda's definition of a flush is different and worth knowing: draining and filling with a drive cycle, three times. No machine involved. It is serial drain-and-fills, which reaches most of the fluid without ever connecting external equipment.

American Honda has published bulletins objecting to aftermarket flush machines. The reported grounds are worth reading precisely: that the maintenance schedule neither requires nor approves them, that they add service time, and that they have not demonstrated improved performance or reliability. That last clause says no demonstrated benefit. It does not say causes damage. We were not able to retrieve those bulletins first-hand and are relying on secondary reporting of their contents.

When it is not a fluid problem

A fluid service fixes a fluid problem. It does not fix a mechanical one, and the difference is usually visible in how the symptom behaves over time.

If you are in the bottom four rows, the pages you want are transmission slipping and transmission shudder, or CVT transmission problems if your car has a continuously variable transmission. Torque converter shudder is the one symptom on that list that does sometimes respond to fresh fluid, which is why it is worth diagnosing rather than assuming.

What it costs, and why the estimates disagree by two to one

Two national estimator brands price this service so differently that their ranges do not overlap at all. Kelley Blue Book puts a fluid change at $150 to $175 and a flush at $165 to $290. RepairPal puts a transmission fluid change at $282 to $343 — a low end above KBB's high end. Neither page carries a publication date. We are showing you both rather than splitting the difference, because splitting the difference would produce a number neither source supports.

  • Fluid volume and specification move the parts cost most. CVT fluids and European OEM-spec fluids are materially more expensive — one Nissan dealer quotes a CVT fluid change at $350 to $400, roughly double KBB's generic figure.
  • Whether a filter and pan gasket are included. Often they are not, and often they should be.
  • Whether the transmission is sealed with no dipstick. The fill-and-level procedure on a sealed unit requires bringing the fluid to a specified temperature and checking at a level plug, which adds labour.
  • DIY runs around $58 in fluid for a drain-and-fill, with 45 to 90 minutes of work, if your transmission is one of the serviceable ones.
