Engine Oil Leak

A dark puddle where you parked, a burning smell, or a dipstick that keeps reading low. Finding out whether it is leaking from the top or the bottom of the engine narrows the answer faster than anything else — and the cost depends almost entirely on which gasket it is.

Quick answer

Oil escaping the engine to the outside, almost always through a gasket or a seal rather than through the metal itself. Check the dipstick before you do anything else — that tells you whether you are actually losing oil and how fast, which matters far more than the size of the puddle. Then work out whether the oil is coming from the top of the engine or the bottom, because that single fork eliminates most of the possible causes. A valve cover gasket and a rear main seal both leak oil, but one is a couple of hundred dollars and the other is a transmission-out job. We will not tell you how many miles you can drive with an oil leak, because no manufacturer or safety agency publishes that figure — but we can tell you what actually determines it.

How far you can drive depends on how fast you are losing oil and where it is landing, not on a number. The honest test is whether you can keep the level above the minimum mark between checks, and whether oil is reaching hot exhaust components. We do not publish a mileage figure because no authoritative source publishes one. There are two separate risks here and they behave differently: running low starves the bearings gradually, while oil dripping onto a hot manifold is an ignition risk that does not care how much oil you have lost.

Symptoms you might notice

  • Dark brown or amber puddles where the car was parked

    Tires Plus describes "dark brown or yellow puddles where your car was sitting." Midas calls it brown or amber fluid; Meineke calls it greasy-looking brown liquid. The identifying feature is not the colour — brake fluid and power steering fluid overlap in the brown band — it is the texture. AAA notes oil is "slick and will be difficult to wipe off," and NAPA adds that it smells like cooking oil.

  • The dipstick keeps reading low between changes

    This is the symptom that actually matters, and it is the one to establish first. An engine can drop oil onto the driveway for months without the level moving much, or it can lose a quart in a week with barely a visible spot. The dipstick tells you the rate; the puddle only tells you the location.

  • A burning smell while driving or just after you park

    Oil reaching a hot exhaust manifold burns off. Tires Plus describes the smell as accompanied by "the sound of bacon frying under the hood," which is an unusually accurate description of what a small drip onto a hot pipe actually sounds like. Treat this as more urgent than a puddle, because it means oil is landing on an ignition source.

  • Smoke drifting up from under the hood

    Also oil on the exhaust manifold, further along. This is a leak, not oil burning inside the engine — those are different problems with different repairs. Smoke from under the hood is a leak. Smoke from the tailpipe is consumption. See blue smoke from exhaust if the smoke is coming out of the pipe.

  • The oil pressure warning light comes on

    Worth being precise about this one. Tires Plus notes the light "will alert you if the oil level or oil pressure is lower than normal," but it "doesn't automatically indicate a leak." It is a pressure warning, not a leak detector, and by the time it lights the level is usually well past low. Do not use it as your monitoring method. See oil pressure light.

  • A greasy, dirt-caked engine bay or undercarriage

    Oil is sticky and road dust sticks to it, so a long-running leak builds a black crust that spreads well downstream of its actual source. This is why the visibly dirtiest area is often not where the leak is — airflow under a moving car carries oil backwards.

  • Wet and shiny versus dry and crusted

    A genuinely useful distinction that most pages skip. Wet, running oil means the leak is active right now. Dry, crusted, dusty buildup can be the residue of something that was repaired years ago, or of a very slow seep. Degrease the area and drive it for a few days before you spend money — it is the cheapest diagnostic step available.

What causes it

  1. Valve cover gasket (top end)

    Very common

    The valve cover bolts to the top of the cylinder head and its gasket is a long, thin rubber seal that hardens with heat cycling. Fel-Pro, a gasket manufacturer, calls it "perhaps the most common source of engine oil leaks" — and we are keeping their hedge rather than upgrading it to a flat claim, both because they hedged it and because they sell gaskets. It is worth knowing that Engine Builder Magazine's ranking of oil leak sources puts the oil pan gasket first instead. Two credible sources disagree on the ordering, so treat any confident "most common cause" list, including ours, with some suspicion.

    How to spot it

    Oil pooling in the spark plug wells, running down the side of the cylinder head, or dripping onto the exhaust manifold from above — which is what produces the burning smell. Look along the seam where the valve cover meets the head with a flashlight.

    The fix

    Replace the gasket. On many four-cylinder engines this is a genuinely accessible job; on transverse V6s the rear bank can require removing the intake manifold.

  2. Camshaft and timing cover seals (top end)

    Common

    Fel-Pro lists camshaft seals on overhead-cam engines and timing cover gaskets among the common leak points. These sit at the front of the engine behind the accessory belt, so oil from them tends to get flung around by the belt and pulleys, spreading the mess widely and making the source hard to pin down.

    How to spot it

    Oil around the crankshaft pulley or the front of the cylinder head, often with oil spray fanned across nearby components in the direction of belt rotation.

    The fix

    Reseal the timing cover or replace the cam seals. Labour dominates the cost because the front of the engine has to come apart.

  3. Oil filter housing and oil cooler gaskets (top end)

    Common

    Fel-Pro lists oil filter housing and oil cooler base gaskets as leak points. There is a well-documented case on the Chrysler 3.6L Pentastar V6: Stellantis technical service bulletin 09-003-25, issued February 2025, covers 2022–2025 RAM 1500, Jeep Wrangler and Gladiator, Chrysler Pacifica, Dodge Durango and Jeep Grand Cherokee with that engine, where customers observe "oil found on the ground beneath the vehicle," sometimes with a check engine light and code P06DD. Notably, the bulletin's stated concern is that filter assemblies are "being replaced excessively without proper diagnosis" — so the manufacturer is warning against the exact shortcut that parts vendors recommend.

    How to spot it

    Oil around the oil filter area that is present even after a careful filter change, or oil tracking down the back of the engine from above.

    Diagnose before replacing. The bulletin exists precisely because the assembly is frequently swapped without confirming it is the source.

  4. Improperly installed or loose oil filter

    Common

    Firestone, Tires Plus and Valvoline all name this. Two variants: the filter was not tightened enough, or the old filter's rubber gasket stayed stuck to the engine and the new filter sealed on top of it — the double-gasket failure, which leaks badly and immediately. If your leak started right after an oil change, start here and nowhere else.

    How to spot it

    A leak that began within a day or two of a service, with oil concentrated around the filter itself.

  5. Oil drain plug or its gasket

    Common

    Firestone names "an oil drain plug gasket that's not sealing properly"; Fel-Pro lists the drain plug seal. The crush washer is designed to deform once, and reusing it repeatedly, or over-torquing the plug into an aluminium pan, both produce weeps.

    A drip from the lowest point of the oil pan, directly at the plug.

    New crush washer, torqued to spec. Stripped pan threads are a much larger job.

  6. Oil pan gasket (bottom end)

    Common

    Engine Builder Magazine ranks the oil pan gasket as the number one source of oil leaks, ahead of the valve cover — the direct contradiction of Fel-Pro noted above. The pan seals along a long perimeter at the bottom of the engine, and on many vehicles the subframe or exhaust has to come out of the way to drop it, which is where the cost goes.

    How to spot it

    Oil along the mating seam between the pan and the block, with the drip forming at the lowest corner rather than where the leak actually starts.

  7. Front and rear crankshaft seals (bottom end)

    Occasional

    Fel-Pro lists crankshaft seals among common leak sources. The front seal is behind the crank pulley. The rear main seal sits between the engine and the transmission, and reaching it means separating the two — which is why the same physical part is a modest repair at one end of the engine and a major one at the other.

    How to spot it

    For the rear main: oil dripping from the bellhousing seam between engine and transmission, typically worst after the car has been driven and then parked.

    Replace the seal. On the rear main this is usually a transmission-out operation.

  8. PCV system and high crankcase pressure

    Occasional

    The crankcase ventilation system relieves pressure that builds up inside the engine. When it clogs, that pressure has to go somewhere and it pushes oil past seals that were otherwise sealing perfectly well. This is the cause that makes people replace the same gasket twice. It is also the genuine grey zone between leaking and burning: high crankcase pressure both forces oil out past seals and draws oil into the intake to be burned.

    How to spot it

    Multiple gaskets weeping at once, or a gasket that starts leaking again shortly after being replaced.

    Test and service the PCV system before replacing gaskets, not after.

  9. Physical damage to the oil pan

    Rare

    Firestone lists a damaged oil pan among its causes. The pan is the lowest part of the engine and sits directly in the path of road debris, speed bumps and kerbs. A puncture produces a fast leak; a dent that distorts the sealing flange produces a slow one.

    How to spot it

    Visible impact damage, scraping or a dent on the pan, usually with fresh oil at the deformed area.

    Replace the pan. Welding an aluminium pan is rarely worthwhile.

  10. Cracked oil separator housing

    Rare

    Included because it is the clearest documented example of an oil leak becoming a fire risk rather than a wear problem. NHTSA recall 22V191000 covers 2020–2022 Ford Escape and 2021–2022 Bronco Sport with the 1.5L engine: "The engine oil separator housing may crack and develop an oil leak," with the stated consequence that "an oil leak in the presence of an ignition source such as hot engine or exhaust components, can increase the risk of a fire."

    Applies to specific vehicles under a specific recall. Check your VIN against the NHTSA recall database rather than guessing.

How to diagnose it

  1. Check the dipstick first, and write the number down

    Before you look at the puddle, establish whether you are actually losing oil and how fast. Check it cold on level ground, note where the level sits, then check again after a known number of miles. A leak that does not move the dipstick over a week is a different problem from one that drops a quart in three days, and every decision after this depends on which one you have.

  2. Confirm the fluid is actually oil

    Put a sheet of cardboard under the car overnight. Oil is slick and, in AAA's words, "difficult to wipe off"; NAPA describes it as thick and slippery with a cooking-oil smell. Fresh oil is amber, ageing to brown and black. The fluids most often mistaken for it are power steering fluid and brake fluid, both of which also fall in the brown band — use smell and texture, not colour.

  3. Fork the search: top end or bottom end

    This is the step that saves the most time and almost nobody structures their advice around it. With a flashlight, look at the top of the engine first: along the valve cover seam, around the oil filler cap, down the sides of the cylinder head, and at the front where the timing cover is. Then look underneath at the oil pan, the drain plug, the filter and the bellhousing seam. Gravity means oil travels down and back, so the highest wet point is closer to the source than the lowest one.

    Result: Roughly half the candidate causes eliminated.

  4. Separate fresh oil from historic residue

    Wet, shiny, still-running oil means an active leak. Dry, crusted, dust-caked buildup may be years old and already fixed. If you cannot tell, degrease the suspect area thoroughly, drive normally for a few days and look again. This is free and it is the step most often skipped before parts get bought.

  5. If nothing is visible, consider the hidden-pooling case

    Oil can be lost without an obvious external trail. FCA technical service bulletin 09-008-15 documents exactly this on the 3.6L V6 in 2014 Chrysler 300, Charger, Grand Cherokee, Durango, Wrangler, RAM 1500 and Challenger built before 20 January 2014: oil can pool in the engine valley beneath the lower intake manifold, where it "may hold almost a quart of oil and not show any visible signs of oil weeping." A vehicle can be down a quart with a completely clean driveway.

    Result: An explanation for losing oil with no puddle.

  6. Escalate to dye if the source still will not show itself

    A shop adds UV dye to the oil, runs the engine, and inspects with an ultraviolet lamp. The dye traces the oil back to its origin rather than to where it drips off. This is the standard approach when visual inspection fails, and manufacturer bulletins on the harder cases expect diagnosis before parts replacement rather than after.

Tighten or correctly reseat the oil filter

If the leak started immediately after a service, check this before anything else. A loose filter or a doubled-up gasket costs nothing to correct and is a real, documented cause named by Firestone, Tires Plus and Valvoline alike.

Valve cover gasket replacement

The most commonly performed oil leak repair. The two sources we have disagree completely and their ranges do not overlap: RepairPal's national estimate is $366–$502, of which $282–$413 is labour, while Synchrony puts the total at $240–$285. We are publishing both rather than averaging them, because an average would be a number neither source supports.

Synchrony puts this at $860–$1,050 total, with $700–$890 of that being labour. Only one source in our set publishes a figure, so treat it as an indication rather than a range you can hold anyone to.

Rear main seal replacement

We have no reliable published cost range for this repair and we are not going to invent one. It is one of the most searched oil leak repairs there is, which makes the absence of a defensible figure conspicuous, but we checked and the estimator sources that price other seals do not produce an extractable range for this one. What we can tell you is the shape of the job: the transmission generally has to come out to reach the seal, so the labour is dominated by access rather than by the seal itself, which costs very little.

This range is deliberately wide and it is not a typical figure. Oil leak repair cost is entirely determined by which gasket is leaking, and the published component figures run from $60–$100 for an oil filter cap to $860–$1,050 for a timing cover. One widely-cited source headlines "about $600 to $1,000" for oil leak repair, but that headline is contradicted by its own table, where five of six repairs come in under $500 — so we are not repeating it. Costs vary by vehicle, location, labour rate and parts, and where two sources disagree we show both rather than averaging them into a number neither one supports.

When to see a mechanic

  • You can smell burning oil or see smoke from under the hood. Oil on hot exhaust components is an ignition risk. NHTSA has issued multiple recalls whose stated consequence is oil accumulating "near ignition sources such as hot engine or exhaust components, possibly resulting in an engine compartment fire." This one does not wait for a convenient appointment.
  • The oil pressure light comes on. That is a pressure warning, not a level warning, and by the time it lights the engine may already be running without adequate lubrication. Stop and check the level rather than driving to a shop.
  • The level drops noticeably between checks, or you are adding oil more often than you change it.
  • The leak is coming from the seam between the engine and the transmission — that points at the rear main seal, which is not a driveway repair.
  • You replaced a gasket and the leak came back. Something is driving the pressure, and the PCV system is the usual suspect.
  • Multiple gaskets are weeping at the same time. That is a system-level cause, not several coincidences.
  • Oil is visible on the drive belt or its pulleys. A belt contaminated with oil can slip or fail, taking the water pump and alternator drive with it.

How far can you drive with an oil leak?

What we can do is tell you what the answer actually depends on, because it is not distance. How far you can drive depends on how fast you are losing oil and where it is landing. The honest test is whether you can keep the level above the minimum mark between checks, and whether oil is reaching hot exhaust components.

Two different risks, which is why one number cannot cover it

An oil leak carries two risks that behave nothing alike, and most advice on this topic silently mixes them together.

  • The gradual risk is oil starvation. Fel-Pro puts it bluntly: "Driving with low or no oil is a recipe for expensive repair bills," noting that low oil raises engine temperatures, breaks down lubrication and damages pistons, rings, lifters and bearings, and that "even small leaks can result in rapid oil loss and escalating damage." Firestone describes the endpoint — without lubrication "the pistons can grind against other engine parts, generate intense amounts of heat, and cause your engine to seize and stall," with "potentially irreversible damage." This risk is governed by rate versus how often you check the dipstick.
  • The acute risk is fire. This one is governed by location, not by quantity. NHTSA recall 22V191000 states the consequence of a cracked oil separator housing plainly: "An oil leak in the presence of an ignition source such as hot engine or exhaust components, can increase the risk of a fire." Several further Ford recalls describe engine oil released into the engine compartment accumulating "near ignition sources such as hot engine or exhaust components, possibly resulting in an engine compartment fire." A very small leak in the wrong place is more dangerous than a larger one in the right place.

Neither of these maps onto a mileage figure, which is the real reason no credible source gives one. If you can smell burning oil or see smoke from the engine bay, you are in the second category and the answer is not a distance — it is stop and get it looked at.

Leaking oil and burning oil are not the same problem

This distinction is worth a section of its own because several otherwise reputable sources get it wrong, and the confusion sends people to the wrong repair.

An oil leak means oil is escaping the engine to the outside — onto the ground, into the engine bay, or onto hot components. Oil consumption means oil is getting into the combustion chamber and being burned along with the fuel, which produces blue smoke from the tailpipe and points at piston rings, valve stem seals or turbo seals instead of gaskets. Different parts, different repairs, different costs.

You will find sources listing "blue smoke from the tailpipe" as a symptom of an oil leak. Those sources are conflating leaking with burning, and we are flagging it rather than repeating it, because acting on it means paying to reseal gaskets on an engine whose gaskets are fine. If your symptom is blue tailpipe smoke, blue smoke from exhaust is the page you want.

The one place they genuinely overlap

Crankcase ventilation. When the PCV system clogs, pressure builds inside the engine and does two things at once: it pushes oil out past seals, which is a leak, and it draws oil into the intake to be burned, which is consumption. If you have both symptoms together, that is the thing to test — and it is why replacing a gasket sometimes fixes nothing.

Top end or bottom end: the fork that narrows it fastest

Almost every page on this topic gives you a flat list of ten possible causes. That is not how you actually find a leak. The first thing to establish is whether the oil is leaving the engine from above or below, because that alone eliminates about half the list.

Why two reputable sources quote different prices

When we researched costs for this page we found that the two most commonly cited sources give ranges that do not overlap at all on the two most common repairs. Rather than pick one, or split the difference into a number neither supports, we are showing you both.

RepairPal's estimator pages carry their own caveat, and it is a fair one: the range "does not include taxes and fees, and does not factor in your unique location. Related repairs may also be needed." Synchrony's table was published in December 2023 and is described as approximate rather than as a national average.

The repair with no published price

Rear main seal replacement is one of the most searched oil leak repairs and we could not find a defensible published range for it. We are leaving it blank rather than filling it in. The seal itself is inexpensive; what you are paying for is separating the engine and transmission to reach it, and that varies so much between vehicles that a national figure would not help you anyway. Get a quote from a shop that has actually looked at your car.

One further note on the 3.6L filter housing. Parts vendors widely claim these fail because the plastic cracks and recommend an aluminium replacement. That is not what the manufacturer bulletin says — it warns against replacing filter assemblies without proper diagnosis first. We are reporting the bulletin, not the vendor consensus.

Is it definitely oil? A fluid identification guide

Colour is where most people start and it is the least reliable signal available. Engine oil, brake fluid and power steering fluid all overlap in the brown band. Smell, texture and location are what actually resolve it. This table draws on AAA Club Alliance and NAPA, which agree closely on the fluids they both cover.

Is it worth fixing?

This is, judging by what people actually search and ask, the real question behind a lot of oil leak research — and it deserves a straight answer rather than an automatic "see a mechanic immediately."

A slow seep that does not move the dipstick between oil changes, is nowhere near the exhaust, and leaves a coin-sized spot on the driveway is a maintenance item, not an emergency. Monitoring it and topping up is a legitimate choice, particularly on an older car where the repair cost approaches the car's value. What makes that choice reasonable is actually monitoring — checking the dipstick on a schedule, not remembering to sometimes.

  1. Establish the rate before you price the repair

    A quart every 3,000 miles and a quart every 300 miles are different problems even if the puddle looks the same. Everything else follows from this number.

  2. Find out where the oil is landing
