What To Do When Your Check Engine Light Comes On

A steady light means read the code within a week. A flashing light means pull over. Here is how to tell the difference and what to do next.

First, look at how the light behaves. A steady check engine light means the engine computer stored a fault but the car is not damaging itself — drive it, but get the code read within a week. A flashing light means raw fuel is passing into the exhaust and can destroy a catalytic converter in minutes, so reduce speed and stop driving as soon as it is safe. Before you book anything, read the code yourself with a $25 OBD-II scanner or at a chain parts store that reads them free, because the code tells you whether you are looking at a $20 gas cap or a $1,800 converter.

The first five minutes

The light itself tells you almost nothing about severity. What tells you is the behavior of the light plus what the car is doing. Run through this before you decide whether to keep driving.

  1. Check whether the light is flashing

    A flashing or blinking light means an active misfire severe enough to dump unburned fuel into the exhaust. Ease off the throttle, avoid highway speeds, and get off the road. Continued driving in this state routinely turns a $200 ignition coil into a $1,200 catalytic converter.

  2. Scan the other gauges

    Look at the temperature gauge and check for an oil pressure light or temperature warning light. A check engine light on its own is rarely urgent. Paired with either of those red lights, stop the engine.

  3. Notice how the car drives

    Shaking, hesitation, a loss of power, or a new noise moves the problem up the priority list. If the car drives exactly as it did yesterday, you have time.

  4. Check the gas cap

    Pull over, remove the cap and reseat it until it clicks. A loose or cracked cap is one of the single most common triggers, and it sets an EVAP code like P0455. The light will not clear immediately — it usually takes several drive cycles.

What the light actually means

The check engine light — properly the malfunction indicator lamp — is an emissions warning, not a general health warning. It illuminates when the engine control module sees a reading outside the range it expects from a sensor, or when a self-test fails. That is a narrower scope than most drivers assume.

  • It does cover misfires, fuel trim, oxygen sensors, EVAP leaks, catalytic converter efficiency and many transmission faults.
  • It does not cover brakes, tires, steering, suspension or most electrical accessories — those have their own lights or no light at all.
  • It does not know what part is broken. A code names a circuit or a condition, not a component.

That last point is the one that costs people money. P0420 does not mean replace the catalytic converter. It means the downstream oxygen sensor is not seeing the pattern it expects, which can be a bad sensor, an exhaust leak ahead of the sensor, or an engine burning oil — all cheaper than a converter.

Can you keep driving?

Steady light, drives normally
Yes. Read the code within a week and address it before your next inspection.

No. Stop as soon as it is safe and have the car towed or moved a short distance at low speed.

One thing worth saying plainly: do not clear the code to make the light go away before an emissions test. Clearing resets the readiness monitors, and an inspection station will fail you for incomplete monitors just as fast as for a stored code.

What to tell the shop

Shops charge for diagnostic time, typically $90 to $180 for the first hour. You can shorten that hour by arriving with facts instead of the light is on.

  1. The exact code or codes, including any pending ones.
  2. Whether the light is steady or flashing, and when it first appeared.
  3. What the car was doing — cold start, highway cruise, right after a fill-up, right after rain.
  4. Any recent work done on the car, including a recent oil change or battery swap.
  5. Whether the light has ever cleared itself and returned.

Frequently asked questions

Will the check engine light turn off by itself?
Sometimes. If the fault stops recurring, most engine computers extinguish the lamp after roughly three consecutive clean drive cycles. The code stays in memory as a history code, which is why a scanner still finds it. A light that clears itself repeatedly is describing an intermittent fault, not a fixed one.
Can I just disconnect the battery to reset it?
It usually works and it is usually a bad idea. You erase the freeze-frame data that tells a technician what conditions were present when the fault set, you reset the readiness monitors so you cannot pass an emissions test for a few hundred miles, and the underlying fault is untouched.
Is it worth buying my own scanner?
