Do it yourself

Realistic for a competent DIYer on a vehicle with a mechanical parking brake. Vehicles with an electric parking brake need a scan tool to retract the rear pistons, and forcing them destroys the actuator.

What brakes cost over a vehicle's life
Brake spending is lumpy but predictable. A typical passenger car needs front pads roughly every 30,000 to 50,000 miles and rotors on about every second pad service. Over 150,000 miles that is three to five front services and two to three rear ones.
- Compact sedan, 150,000 miles — roughly $1,400 to $2,400 total in brake service.
- Half-ton pickup, 150,000 miles — roughly $2,200 to $3,800, more if it tows regularly.
- European sport sedan, 150,000 miles — roughly $2,800 to $5,000, driven by larger brakes, wear sensors and higher parts pricing.
- Hybrid, 150,000 miles — often under $1,200, because regenerative braking does most of the deceleration. Caliper seizure from disuse becomes the more likely repair.
