Dealer

OEM starter and factory labor time. Worth considering on vehicles with stop-start systems, where the starter is a heavy-duty unit engineered for tens of thousands of cycles and a generic replacement fails early.
Independent shop
$400–$900
The usual best value. An experienced independent will also check the battery cables and ignition switch circuit before condemning the starter, which is where a meaningful share of no-crank complaints actually live.
National chain
$380–$800
Competitive on accessible starters. Chains are less likely to take on the buried-under-the-intake-manifold jobs, and if they quote one of those cheaply it is worth asking how they plan to do it.
Do it yourself
$180–$700 part only
Reasonable when the starter is reachable from underneath with the vehicle on stands. Disconnect the battery negative first — the starter's main terminal is live to the battery at all times and a dropped wrench across it will weld itself in place.

Starter, battery or something else
What you hear when you turn the key narrows this down faster than any test. The starter draws enormous current — often 150 to 300 amps — so a marginal battery or a corroded cable produces symptoms identical to a failed starter.

The $10 checks worth doing before you approve $800
A meaningful share of no-crank complaints resolve without touching the starter. These are quick, and any competent shop should already have done them before quoting.
- Clean and tighten the battery terminals. Corrosion under a clamp creates enough resistance to starve a healthy starter.
- Load test the battery. A battery reading 12.4V at rest can still collapse under a 200-amp draw.
- Check the main ground strap from engine to body. A corroded strap is a $15 part that mimics a dead starter exactly.
- Try the shifter in neutral on an automatic. If it cranks in neutral but not park, the fault is the neutral safety switch, not the starter.
- Voltage-drop test the positive cable from battery to starter with the key held to crank. More than about 0.5V drop means the cable, not the motor.
