Where you get it done

Dealer
$250–$450
Correct refrigerant charge by weight to factory specification, which matters more than it sounds — modern systems are sensitive to a few ounces either way. Required equipment for R-1234yf is expensive, and dealers reliably have it.
Independent shop
$180–$350
Most well-equipped independents have a recovery machine and can do this properly. Ask whether the price includes leak detection, because a recharge without finding the leak is a temporary purchase.
National chain
$150–$300
Fine for an R-134a system that simply needs a proper evacuate-and-recharge. The tradeoff is that a fixed-price recharge creates no incentive to spend time finding the leak, and you may be back next summer.
Do it yourself
$40–$70 recharge can
The parts-store can with a gauge is the least advisable DIY on this site. Those gauges read low-side pressure only, which cannot tell you the actual charge weight, and overcharging is the most common way to destroy a compressor. R-1234yf systems should not be touched this way at all.

A recharge is not a repair
Automotive air conditioning is a sealed loop. It does not consume refrigerant the way an engine consumes oil. If the system is low, refrigerant left through a hole — a seal, an O-ring, a hose, a condenser damaged by road debris, or the compressor shaft seal.

Check these before paying for anything
Air conditioning complaints split into two categories that feel similar from the driver's seat and have completely different price tags. Air that is cold but weak is an airflow problem. Air that is plentiful but not cold is a refrigerant or compressor problem.
- Cabin air filter. A clogged filter is the most common cause of weak airflow, and it is a $20 part you can change yourself. See cabin air filter replacement.
- Compressor clutch engagement. With the AC on max, look at the compressor pulley — the center hub should be spinning with it. If it is not, the system may be locked out on low pressure, or the clutch or relay has failed.
- Condenser fins. Bugs, leaves and road debris packed against the condenser in front of the radiator cripple cooling at idle while the car still cools fine at highway speed.
- Cooling fan operation. If the fans do not run with the AC on, cooling collapses in traffic. That is an electrical fault, not a refrigerant one.
- Blend door. Cold on one side and warm on the other usually means an actuator, which is $150 to $500 and has nothing to do with refrigerant.
