How to diagnose it

  1. Do the empty parking lot circle test

    Find an empty lot, roll at about 5 mph with the wheel turned to full lock, and drive a tight circle in one direction. Then repeat in the other direction. A clicking that appears in one direction and not the other confirms a CV joint on the side opposite the direction of turn — clicking in left circles means the right axle. Lower the windows and turn the radio off.

  2. Look at both CV boots

    Turn the wheel to full lock so the boot is exposed, and look at the black accordion-pleated rubber at the wheel end of the axle. You are looking for splits, cracks between the pleats, or a missing clamp. Then look for grease spatter on the inside of the wheel, the inner fender liner and nearby suspension parts. Repeat with the wheel at the opposite lock for the other side.

  3. Rule out sway bar links and bumps

  4. Test for a wheel bearing with the sway test

    On an empty road at about 40 mph, gently swing the car left, then right, in slow S-curves without changing speed. A wheel bearing noise gets noticeably louder when weight shifts onto it and quieter when weight moves off. A CV joint does not behave that way — it responds to steering angle, not load transfer.

  5. Check for play with the wheel raised

    With the vehicle safely on jack stands and the wheel off the ground, grip the tire at 12 and 6 o'clock and rock it — movement there means a wheel bearing or ball joint. Other noises that happen while turning

Not everything that makes noise in a turn is an axle. The character of the sound and exactly when it occurs narrow it down before anyone puts the car on a lift.

  • Whining or groaning that rises with steering effort is the power steering system — low fluid, a failing pump, or on electric systems a failing rack motor. It follows how hard you turn, not how far.
