What the light means
This lamp means the anti-lock brake control module has detected a fault and taken itself offline. The base hydraulic system is untouched: pedal, master cylinder, lines, calipers and pads all work exactly as they did yesterday, and the car stops normally in ordinary driving. What the module can no longer do is watch each wheel's speed and release and reapply that wheel's brake up to fifteen times a second when it detects lockup. In an emergency stop on wet pavement, ice, gravel or painted lines, the wheels can now lock — and a locked wheel does not steer, so you lose the ability to swerve around whatever you are braking for. On most vehicles the same module also runs traction and stability control, so those switch off with it.
What to do right now
1Check whether the red BRAKE lamp is also lit. Amber ABS alone is a system fault; both together should be treated as a hydraulic problem until you have checked the pedal and fluid.
2Note whether the traction control or stability lamp came on at the same moment — they share the module and the same wheel speed sensors.
3Test the pedal at low speed in a safe spot. It should feel exactly normal. Anything spongy or long changes the situation entirely.
4Increase your following distance and start braking earlier. Assume you have no anti-lock assistance from here on.

Each wheel carries a sensor reading a toothed ring on the hub or axle. They sit in the worst environment on the car — road salt, water, stone impacts — and their connectors corrode. When one drops out or reads erratically, the module cannot compare wheel speeds and disables itself.
How to spot it
The scan names one specific corner. On many vehicles the speedometer also drops out or the transmission shifts oddly, because the module shares that signal.

Replace the named sensor and clean its mounting bore, which is often packed with rust that holds the sensor away from the ring.

Common
The toothed reluctor ring the sensor reads can rust, crack, or shed teeth, particularly on vehicles in salt states. A ring that is rusting outward from underneath physically lifts away from the sensor and produces a signal that fades in and out with speed.

The fault appears above or below a specific speed rather than all the time, and a new sensor did not fix it.

Low brake fluid or air in the hydraulic system
Common
The ABS module needs a solid column of fluid to modulate pressure. Low fluid or trapped air makes its self-test fail, and it shuts down rather than pulse an unpredictable system. This is the version that lights both the amber and the red lamp.
How to spot it
The red brake lamp is on too, and the pedal travels further than it used to before firming up.

Find and repair the leak, refill, then bleed — including the ABS module itself, which usually needs a scan tool to cycle its valves.

Failing wheel bearing or hub assembly

On most modern vehicles the speed sensor is built into the hub assembly. A bearing with play lets the hub wobble, which changes the sensor air gap and corrupts the signal long before the bearing is noisy enough to condemn on its own.

A hum or drone that changes pitch or volume when you sway the car left and right at 40 mph, plus play when you rock the tire at 12 and 6 o'clock.

Why the ABS light also disables your traction control
Traction control and stability control are not separate hardware. They are software features running on the same module, using the same four wheel speed sensors and the same hydraulic pump that ABS uses. Traction control brakes a spinning driven wheel; stability control brakes one corner to correct a slide. Both need to know how fast each wheel is turning, and both need the pump to apply pressure without your foot on the pedal.
So when a wheel speed sensor drops out, the module cannot trust any of its calculations and switches off everything built on top of them at once. Seeing the ABS, traction control and stability lamps illuminate together is not three faults — it is one fault taking down three features.
