  1. Uneven tire pressure

    The lowest tire has a larger contact patch and more rolling resistance, so the car steers toward it.   3. Sticking brake caliper or collapsed brake hose

    Common

    When a caliper piston corrodes in its bore or the slide pins seize, that brake never fully releases and drags constantly. A rubber brake hose can also fail internally, forming a flap that lets pressure in but not out — so the brake applies normally and then stays applied. Both produce heat, accelerated pad wear, and a pull toward the affected side.

  4. Tire conicity or a separated belt

    Common

    A tire can pull all by itself through a manufacturing characteristic called conicity, where the belt package is slightly offset and the tire behaves like a cone rolling in a circle. It can also develop after a belt separates internally. This is easy to confirm and easy to misdiagnose as an alignment problem, because an alignment rack will show everything in spec.

    Swapping the two front tires side to side reverses or eliminates the pull. Sometimes a visible bulge or wave in the sidewall.

How to diagnose it

  1. Check all four tire pressures cold

    Before the car has been driven, or at least three hours after, check every tire with a real gauge against the door jamb sticker. Do not trust the tire pressure monitoring system to catch this — most US systems only warn at 25 percent below spec, which is far more than enough to cause a pull. Correct the pressures and drive again before doing anything else.

  2. Confirm the road is actually flat

    US roads are built with a crown so water drains toward the shoulder, which means nearly every car drifts slightly right in the right-hand lane. A pull that reverses direction when you turn around is road crown, not a fault.

  3. Determine whether the pull happens under braking

    On a safe, empty road, get to about 40 mph and apply the brakes moderately with a light grip on the wheel. When to see a mechanic

  • The pull appeared suddenly rather than gradually, especially after hitting a pothole or curb. Sudden changes indicate something broke rather than wore.
  • The car pulls hard enough under braking that you have to correct with real effort — uneven braking force lengthens stopping distance and can induce a spin in an emergency stop.

Camber, caster and toe — what an alignment actually adjusts

Alignment shops talk in three terms and rarely explain them. Knowing what each one does helps you read the printout and tell whether the work addressed your actual complaint.

  • Camber is the inward or outward tilt of the wheel viewed from the front. Too much negative camber wears the inside edge. A left-right camber difference greater than about 0.5 degrees causes a pull toward the more positive side.
  • Caster is the forward or rearward tilt of the steering axis viewed from the side — it is what makes the steering wheel return to center on its own. A caster split between sides causes a pull without causing much tire wear.
  • Toe is whether the wheels point slightly toward or away from each other from above. It has the largest effect on tire wear of the three, and it is what determines whether your steering wheel sits centered.

Ask for a four-wheel alignment rather than front-only on any vehicle with independent rear suspension, which is most modern cars. A rear thrust angle that is off makes the car track slightly crab-wise and forces the front wheels to compensate, which no amount of front adjustment truly fixes.
