2021 Ford F-150
2021 Ford F-150: No crank or a dash full of warnings, usually the AGM battery
Auto start-stop cycles the battery constantly, and the AGM units fitted to 2021 trucks commonly fail earlier than owners expect.

- Do not drive
A car that will not start is stationary by definition, but the risk is being stranded somewhere worse. If a jump start gets you going, drive straight to a shop or parts store rather than running errands — a car that needed a jump will very likely need another one.

What is different on the 2021 Ford F-150
The vehicle-specific detail — not the generic version of this fault.
Trucks with auto start-stop use an absorbed glass mat battery because a conventional flooded battery cannot survive the cycling. The AGM handles it, but it still degrades, and the F-150 keeps a large number of modules powered — telematics, trailer brake controller, the 360-degree camera system, and on Pro Power Onboard trucks the inverter control. A marginal battery on this truck produces a spectacular dash: message center warnings for the trailer brake, 4x4 system, blind spot monitoring and steering, all at once.
PowerBoost hybrid trucks add a wrinkle. The hybrid's high-voltage system does not crank the engine independently of a healthy 12-volt supply, so a flat 12-volt battery leaves you with a truck that will not enter Ready mode despite a fully charged hybrid pack. The symptom looks catastrophic and is usually a $280 battery.
- AGM battery replacement: $250–$400. It must be an AGM, and it must be registered to the battery monitoring system with a scan tool or the charging strategy will overcharge it. See battery replacement.
- Starter replacement: $400–$700 depending on engine. See starter replacement cost.
- Auto start-stop refusing to engage is often the earliest warning that the battery is on its way out, several weeks before a no-start.
- Check both battery terminals and the engine-to-body ground strap before condemning anything — corrosion here is common on trucks used off pavement.
Parts involved
What a shop will be inspecting or replacing on this job.
- AGM 12-volt battery
- Battery monitoring sensor
- Starter motor
- Ground straps and terminals
The fix and what it costs
Load-test the AGM battery and replace it with an AGM of the same specification, then register the new battery to the monitoring system so the charging strategy adapts correctly.
- Typical repair cost
- $250–$700
- Usually reported at
- 30,000–60,000 miles, or 3–4 years

No crank, a single click, rapid clicking or endless cranking — each sound points at a different failure and a different repair.

- Harsh, clunky or hunting shifts from the 10-speed automaticThe 10R80 draws more owner complaints than any other component on this truck — harsh 1-2 shifts, a clunk on rollback to a stop, and constant gear hunting on grades.
- EcoBoost stumble and misfire in humid or damp conditionsCondensation collects in the air-to-air intercooler and gets pulled into the engine in a slug under hard acceleration, producing a momentary misfire.
- Brake shudder under load or after towingA 5,000-pound truck with a trailer behind it puts far more heat into its rotors than a car does, and thickness variation develops accordingly.
- Powered tailgate releasing on its ownWater intrusion into the tailgate wiring harness can trigger the release latch, and owners have reported tailgates opening while driving.
