Ford F-150

The best-supported vehicle in North America, with an aluminum body, a turbocharged engine range and a complicated 10-speed.

Full-size pickup

Whatever else is true about the F-150, nothing else in America is easier to keep on the road. Parts availability is total, every independent shop knows the platform, and the aftermarket for brakes, suspension and accessories is enormous and competitive. That alone lowers the cost of ownership relative to any import truck.

The aluminum body from 2015 onward is a genuine improvement in corrosion resistance, particularly in road-salt states where steel-bodied trucks rot at the bed and rear wheel arches. The catch is collision repair: aluminum panel work requires a separately certified shop and isolated tooling, which raises body repair costs and, in some markets, insurance premiums.

The powertrain question is EcoBoost versus V8. The 2.7L and 3.5L turbo V6s produce more torque at lower rpm, tow well and use dual injection, so intake valve carbon is not the concern it is on direct-injection-only engines. The 5.0L V8 is simpler with fewer heat-cycled components. Both sit behind the 10-speed automatic, which has generated the largest share of driveline complaints on the platform — harsh 1–2 shifts, clunking on downshifts, and hunting between gears.

Generations

What changed, and which years share the same hardware.

  • Twelfth generation (P415)

    2009–2014

Steel body. Introduced EcoBoost to the F-150 with the 3.5L V6 in 2011 alongside the 5.0L Coyote V8 and 3.7L V6. Early 3.5L EcoBoost engines are known for condensation-related misfires in the intercooler and for timing chain wear if oil changes were stretched.

  • Thirteenth generation (P552)

    2015–2020

Switched to an aluminum-alloy body, cutting roughly 700 pounds. A 2018 refresh brought the 10-speed automatic across most engines, direct-plus-port injection on the 5.0L V8, and the second-generation 3.5L EcoBoost. The 2.7L EcoBoost V6 arrived as the volume engine.

  • Fourteenth generation (P702)

    2021–2024

New interior with a fold-flat shifter and available Pro Power Onboard generator, plus the PowerBoost full hybrid combining the 3.5L EcoBoost with an electric motor in the transmission housing. Suspension and frame carried over largely intact.

  • Fourteenth generation facelift

    2025–present

Revised front-end styling, updated infotainment, simplified trim structure and refinements to the hybrid system.
