What is different on the 2021 Ford F-150
The vehicle-specific detail — not the generic version of this fault.
The third-generation 5.0-liter Coyote uses hydraulically actuated variable cam timing phasers on all four camshafts. When the engine sits overnight, oil drains out of the phaser lock pin, and on affected trucks the pin does not hold the phaser in its parked position. On startup, before oil pressure builds, the phaser rattles against its stops. Owners describe it as a diesel-like clatter or a handful of gravel in a can, lasting two to four seconds and then disappearing completely.
What makes this specific to the F-150 rather than generic engine noise is the follow-on symptom. As phaser wear progresses, some owners report a shudder or surge at light throttle around 1,200 to 1,800 rpm, and in worse cases a stored cam timing correlation code. Ford released updated phaser hardware and revised powertrain software, and dealers have addressed many trucks under powertrain warranty.
- Full phaser and timing chain replacement: $2,500–$4,000 at an independent shop, more at a dealer. The job requires removing the front of the engine.
- Software update alone: often performed first, sometimes reduces the noise, does not fix worn phasers.
- Ford's 5 year/60,000 mile powertrain warranty covers this if the truck is still within it. Check the in-service date, not the model year.
- The 2.7L and 3.5L EcoBoost V6s do not share this failure — it is specific to the Coyote V8's phaser design.
Parts involved
What a shop will be inspecting or replacing on this job.
- Variable cam timing phasers
- Timing chains and guides
- Cam phaser oil control solenoids
- Powertrain control module calibration
The fix and what it costs
Have the latest powertrain software installed and documented. If the rattle persists or a cam correlation code appears, the phasers and chains need replacing as a set.
- Typical repair cost
- $2,500–$4,000
- Usually reported at
- 20,000–70,000 miles

Other issues reported on the 2021 Ford F-150
- Harsh, clunky or hunting shifts from the 10-speed automaticThe 10R80 draws more owner complaints than any other component on this truck — harsh 1-2 shifts, a clunk on rollback to a stop, and constant gear hunting on grades.
- EcoBoost stumble and misfire in humid or damp conditionsCondensation collects in the air-to-air intercooler and gets pulled into the engine in a slug under hard acceleration, producing a momentary misfire.
- Brake shudder under load or after towingA 5,000-pound truck with a trailer behind it puts far more heat into its rotors than a car does, and thickness variation develops accordingly.
- No crank or a dash full of warnings, usually the AGM batteryAuto start-stop cycles the battery constantly, and the AGM units fitted to 2021 trucks commonly fail earlier than owners expect.
- Powered tailgate releasing on its ownWater intrusion into the tailgate wiring harness can trigger the release latch, and owners have reported tailgates opening while driving.
