Overview

The 2021 F-150 is a first-year truck, and that framing matters more than the marketing. The frame, suspension, cab structure and most of the powertrain carried over from the 2015–2020 truck, so this is not a clean-sheet vehicle. What is genuinely new is the interior, the electrical architecture, the fold-flat shifter, the optional onboard generator, and the PowerBoost hybrid — and first-year problems on this truck have clustered in exactly those new areas rather than in the mechanical hardware.

Six engines were offered, which is more choice than any competitor. The 2.7-liter EcoBoost is the sensible volume pick: it makes 400 lb-ft, tows more than most owners need, and uses both port and direct injection so intake valve carbon is not a concern. The 5.0-liter V8 is the choice for people who want fewer heat-cycled components and a simpler engine bay. The PowerBoost hybrid is the most interesting and the most expensive — 430 horsepower, a usable 7.2 kilowatts of onboard power, and the ability to run a job site or a house from the bed.

The aluminum-alloy body carried over and remains a real advantage in road-salt states, where steel-bodied trucks rot through the bed sides and rear arches. The trade-off is collision repair: aluminum panel work needs a separately certified shop with isolated tooling, which raises body shop costs and, in some markets, insurance premiums. This has no effect on mechanical repair costs at all — those remain the lowest in the segment because every shop in America works on these.

The dominant owner complaint on this generation is the 10R80 10-speed automatic, and it is not a reliability failure so much as a refinement one. Harsh 1-2 upshifts, a clunk when the truck rolls to a stop and reselects first, and gear hunting on rolling grades are all widely reported. Ford has addressed much of it through transmission control software updates.

EcoBoost or the 5.0L V8 for towing?
For most towing the 3.5-liter EcoBoost is the better tool. It makes 500 lb-ft at low rpm, so it pulls a trailer without downshifting constantly. The 5.0L V8 makes 410 lb-ft higher in the rev range and works harder for the same load. The V8's advantage is fewer heat-cycled components and simpler long-term ownership. Neither choice is wrong; the EcoBoost is easier to live with under load.
Is the PowerBoost hybrid worth the premium?
It depends entirely on whether you would use Pro Power Onboard. As a fuel-economy play the payback is slow — a few mpg on a truck that already burns a lot. As a 7.2-kilowatt generator that runs tools on a job site or a refrigerator and furnace during an outage, it replaces a separate purchase and the value is obvious. Buy it for the outlets, not the mpg.
Does the aluminum body make repairs more expensive?
Body repairs, yes. Aluminum work requires a certified shop with isolated tools and a separate clean area, so panel and collision work costs more and takes longer, and some insurers price that in. Mechanical repairs are completely unaffected — brakes, suspension, engine and transmission work cost the same as on a steel truck, which is to say among the cheapest in the segment.
Is the 10-speed's harsh shifting a sign of failure?
Usually not. The 10R80 shifts firmly by design and relearns its adaptive tables after any battery disconnect or software update, which takes 100 to 200 miles of mixed driving. What is not normal is a shudder under light throttle at steady highway speed — that points at the torque converter and should be diagnosed rather than driven through.
What should I check on a used 2021 F-150?
Start it genuinely cold and listen for a cam phaser rattle if it is a 5.0L. Check the tailgate operation and run the VIN through NHTSA for open recalls. Confirm the transmission software is current. Look under the truck for frame and suspension corrosion — the body is aluminum, the frame is not.
