Chevrolet Silverado 1500
A durable, easy-to-service full-size truck whose main long-term risk sits in the cylinder deactivation hardware.
The Silverado's core appeal is mechanical simplicity in the areas that matter. The small-block V8 is a pushrod engine with a timing chain and no turbochargers, the frame is conventional, and the truck is designed to be worked on. Labor rates on Silverado repairs are typically the lowest in the segment because every shop is comfortable with them.
The concentrated risk is cylinder deactivation. Dynamic Fuel Management shuts down cylinders in varying patterns to save fuel, which means specific lifters spend long periods collapsed. Owner reports of lifter failure — a distinct tick that becomes a misfire, often setting P0300 or a cylinder-specific code — are common enough that many owners disable the system or install a delete device. A lifter and camshaft repair typically runs $2,500 to $4,500.
The 2019–2021 interior is the other thing to know. It was widely criticized for hard plastics and a dated layout, which is why used examples from those years are cheaper than the equivalent F-150 or Ram. If you care more about the drivetrain and the price than the dashboard, that discount is an opportunity.
Generations
What changed, and which years share the same hardware.
Third generation (K2XX)
2014–2018
Introduced the EcoTec3 engine family — 4.3L V6, 5.3L and 6.2L V8 — with direct injection and Active Fuel Management. A 2016 refresh updated the front end and added the 8-speed automatic on some trims. Steel body throughout.
Fourth generation (T1XX)
2019–2021
Larger, lighter and boxier, with a mixed-materials body using an aluminum hood, doors and tailgate on a steel frame. Added the 2.7L turbo four and a 3.0L Duramax inline-six diesel. Dynamic Fuel Management replaced AFM on the V8s, cycling through 17 cylinder patterns.
Fourth generation facelift
2022–present
Complete interior redesign that finally addressed the biggest criticism of the 2019 truck, with a 13.4-inch center screen and much better materials. Suspension retuned, powertrains carried over with the 2.7L uprated.
