2021 Chevrolet Silverado 1500: Torque converter shudder at light throttle

GM's 8L90 and 8L45 eight-speed automatics developed a well-documented shudder at light throttle between roughly 25 and 50 mph, described almost universally by owners as driving over rumble strips. The cause is the torque converter clutch slipping under a partial lock-up strategy, and GM's own remedy was a change of transmission fluid specification to Mobil 1 Synthetic LV ATF HP, which has different friction characteristics than the original fill.

2021 trucks were built with the updated fluid, so this is far less common than it was on 2015–2019 GM vehicles. It has not vanished. If you feel it on a 2021 Silverado, a multi-stage fluid exchange — draining and refilling several times to displace the old fluid rather than a single drain — is the correct first response, and it resolves a large share of cases without touching hardware.

• Trucks equipped with the 10L80 10-speed rather than the 8-speed do not share this specific characteristic.
• Do not confuse this with an engine misfire. A converter shudder happens only at light throttle in a lock-up gear and disappears the instant you press the accelerator harder; a misfire does not.

One caveat on the speed range above. The 25–50 mph figure is what owners and independent shops consistently report, but GM's own service bulletin covering this condition describes it across a much wider band — 25 to 80 mph at steady throttle. We have not been able to reconcile the two, so if you feel a rumble-strip sensation at highway cruise, do not rule this out just because you are above 50.
