2021 Chevrolet Silverado 1500: Collapsed lifters from Dynamic Fuel Management
A persistent tick that turns into a misfire, caused by deactivating lifters failing on the cylinders the system cycles most. The signature failure of GM's modern V8s.

What is different on the 2021 Chevrolet Silverado 1500
The vehicle-specific detail — not the generic version of this fault.
Dynamic Fuel Management controls oil pressure to a set of switching roller lifters that collapse to hold their valves closed. Each cycle mechanically compresses and releases a locking pin inside the lifter. Over tens of thousands of cycles, a pin sticks, the lifter fails to return to its full-height state, and the valve on that cylinder stops opening properly. In the worst cases the lifter roller disintegrates and takes the camshaft lobe with it.
The symptom sequence is consistent enough to diagnose from the driver's seat. First a tick at idle that sounds like an exhaust leak and gets louder when warm. Then a rough idle. Then a check engine light with a misfire code — on 5.3-liter engines the failures concentrate on the cylinders the deactivation system uses most, so a cylinder-specific code like P0301 alongside a general P0300 is typical. Some trucks also throw a low oil pressure warning as the lifter oil manifold assembly loses control.
- Lifter replacement with the cylinder head off: $2,500–$4,500 depending on how many banks are affected and whether the camshaft survived.
- Camshaft and lifters together: $3,500–$6,000.
- DFM delete — non-deactivating lifters, a delete camshaft or a tune plus a delete device: $1,200–$2,500 when done alongside a lifter job, and the reason most owners never see a second failure. Note that emissions and warranty implications vary by state.
- Use dexos1 Gen 3 oil and change it on schedule. DFM lifters are oil-pressure-controlled devices, and degraded or overextended oil is the most common accelerant.
Parts involved
What a shop will be inspecting or replacing on this job.
- Dynamic Fuel Management valve lifters
- Lifter oil manifold assembly
- Camshaft lobes
- Cylinder head gaskets (during repair)
The fix and what it costs
Replace the failed lifters, inspect the camshaft lobes and replace the camshaft if any are worn, and consider non-deactivating lifters with a supporting tune to prevent recurrence.
- Typical repair cost
- $2,500–$6,000
- Usually reported at
- 60,000–120,000 miles

Other issues reported on the 2021 Chevrolet Silverado 1500
- Vibration between 65 and 80 mphGM full-size trucks have a well-documented highway vibration traced to driveshaft balance and tire road-force variation rather than a single defective part.
- Brake pulsation on a loaded or towing truckSilverado rotors are large but the truck is heavy, and thickness variation develops fast on trucks that tow or descend grades regularly.
- Torque converter shudder at light throttleA sensation like driving over rumble strips at steady cruise, caused by torque converter clutch slip in the 8-speed automatic.
- No crank with a cluster of unrelated warning messagesA weak battery on a Silverado produces a dash full of alarming service messages long before it produces an actual no-start.
