Manufacturer-specific issues — what is actually documented
A great deal is written about which brands have bad CVTs, most of it sourced to nothing in particular. We are only going to cover what has a documented paper trail — a settlement, a published warranty extension, or a regulator's complaint record.
Nissan — the best documented
Nissan settled a class action over its CVTs for $277.7 million. As part of it, the New Vehicle Limited Warranty on the transmission assembly and control unit was extended from 60 months / 60,000 miles to 84 months / 84,000 miles, covering the valve body, torque converter and related components, on models including the Altima, Juke, Sentra and Versa. A separate settlement covers 2015–2018 Murano and 2016–2018 Maxima, with reimbursement provisions up to $5,000 or a $1,500 voucher.
Separately, more than 100 complaints have been filed with NHTSA since January 2013 regarding judder on the 2013–2014 Pathfinder and the Infiniti JX35 and QX60.
Subaru — documented, but read the framing carefully
Subaru extended CVT warranty coverage from 5 years / 60,000 miles to 10 years / 100,000 miles across roughly 1.5 million vehicles: 2010–2015 Legacy and Outback, 2012–2015 Impreza, 2013–2015 Crosstrek, 2014–2015 Crosstrek Hybrid, 2014–2015 Forester in both 2.5L and 2.0L turbo forms, and the 2015 WRX 2.0.
What we are deliberately not covering
There are widely repeated claims about other manufacturers' CVT judder investigations and warranty extensions. When we went looking for the underlying documentation, the only sources we could find were repair-shop blogs repeating each other. That is not a good enough basis for a manufacturer-specific reliability claim on a page people use to make purchase decisions, so we have left them out until we can verify them against a regulator's investigation record or a manufacturer bulletin directly. Whether that trade is acceptable depends less on the badge than on three practical questions.
1Does the vehicle have documented fluid service at the correct specification? This is the strongest single signal available to a buyer, and it is checkable. A CVT with recorded fluid changes using the named fluid has been treated the way the design requires.
2How is the car going to be used? Towing, sustained mountain driving and heavy stop-and-go traffic are the conditions that stress a CVT hardest. If that is your driving, the severe-duty schedule is your schedule, and you should budget for it.
3What does a replacement cost relative to the car's value? Because rebuilding is usually not on the table, the downside case is a whole-unit replacement. On a high-value car that is a bad year. On a cheap older car it can be the end of the car.
