Treat this as stop-driving until you have proven otherwise, and the proof takes two minutes: parking brake fully off, pedal firm, reservoir between MIN and MAX. Meet all three and you can drive carefully to a shop the same day. Fail any of them and the car should be towed. A pressure differential fault means one of the two hydraulic circuits is already gone — the remaining circuit still stops the car, but with roughly double the pedal travel and far longer stopping distances, which is exactly the wrong thing to discover in traffic.

What the light means
Three separate circuits feed this one lamp on most vehicles, which is why it means very different things at different times. The first is the parking brake switch — the harmless one. The second is a float in the master cylinder reservoir that closes when fluid drops below MIN. The third is a pressure differential switch that trips when one half of the split hydraulic circuit loses pressure relative to the other, and that one means you have already lost part of your braking system. Brake fluid is not consumed the way oil or coolant is, so a level that has fallen has either gone into the calipers as the pads wore, or it has leaked out.
What to do right now
1Confirm the parking brake is fully released. This is by far the most common cause and it takes five seconds to rule out.
2Press the brake pedal and pay attention to how it feels. Firm and high near the top is reassuring; spongy, long, or sinking toward the floor is not.
3If the pedal is soft, slow down using engine braking and steady moderate pedal pressure. Do not pump it hard and do not save your braking for one panic stop.
4Pull over and open the hood. Check the brake fluid reservoir against its MIN and MAX marks.
5If the pedal is soft, or the fluid is at or below MIN, stop driving and call a tow. If the pedal is firm and the fluid is full, drive gently to a shop.

Very common
The lamp is wired to a simple switch at the lever, pedal or electronic actuator. A hand lever left one click up, a foot pedal that did not return fully, or a switch that has gone out of adjustment all light the same bulb with nothing wrong in the hydraulics.
How to spot it
The lamp goes out when you push the lever or pedal fully down, or when you cycle an electric parking brake switch on and back off.

Release fully. If it recurs, adjust or replace the switch, or free up a parking brake cable that is no longer returning.

Low brake fluid from worn pads
Very common
As friction material wears away, the caliper pistons extend further to reach the rotor, and the fluid that fills that space comes out of the reservoir. A level that has drifted down to MIN over 40,000 miles usually means the pads are at the end of their life, not that anything is leaking.
How to spot it
Fluid sits just below MIN, the pedal is still firm, and the pads visible through the wheel spokes look thin — under about 3mm of material.

Replace the brake pads. The fluid level rises back to normal on its own as the pistons are pushed back in.

Brake fluid leak
Common
Rubber flex hoses split, steel lines rust through in salt states, caliper piston seals fail and master cylinder seals leak internally into the vacuum booster. Any of these drops the level and, if a circuit loses pressure, trips the differential switch as well.
How to spot it
The level drops again after being topped off, with a wet oily film on the inside of a wheel, a damp spot on a hose or line, or damp carpet under the pedal.
The fix
Locate the leak, replace the failed hose, line, caliper or master cylinder, and bleed the system properly afterward.

Failing master cylinder
Common
Internal seals let fluid bypass inside the cylinder rather than leaking out. Pressure builds when you first press, then bleeds away past the seal, so the pedal slowly sinks with no puddle anywhere and no drop in reservoir level.
How to spot it
Sitting at a light with steady foot pressure, the pedal creeps slowly toward the floor. No external leak is visible anywhere.

Replace the master cylinder, bench-bleed it before fitting, then flush the system.

Failed fluid level sensor or wiring fault
Occasional
The reservoir float and its connector are exposed to heat and vibration. A corroded connector or a stuck float lights the lamp with a full reservoir and perfect brakes behind it. Common on vehicles past ten years, particularly where the connector sits low in the engine bay.
How to spot it
The lamp flickers on over bumps or in hard turns and goes back out, with fluid at MAX and a normal firm pedal.

Dashboard color follows a convention that is worth internalising once. Red means a system that stops the car or protects you has a fault right now. Amber means an assistance system has switched itself off but the underlying mechanical function remains. On the brakes, that distinction is the difference between a tow and an appointment next week.

Why brake fluid level drops on its own
Brake fluid is not burned, evaporated or consumed. It moves. In a sealed, healthy system, the only reason the reservoir level falls is that fluid has migrated into the calipers to take up the space left by worn pad material — which is why the reservoir slowly empties over the life of a set of pads and refills itself when new ones go in.
Falling slowly over tens of thousands of miles, pedal firm: normal pad wear. Inspect the pads rather than adding fluid.
Falling noticeably over days or weeks: a leak. Find it before you drive.
Level unchanged but pedal sinking: an internal master cylinder leak, which shows nothing in the reservoir.
Level at MAX with the lamp on: a level sensor or wiring fault, once the parking brake is ruled out.
One more property matters: brake fluid is hygroscopic, meaning it absorbs moisture from the air through the hoses and reservoir. Fresh DOT 3 boils around 400°F; after two to three years of absorbing water, that can drop toward 280°F. Fluid that boils under hard braking creates compressible vapor and a pedal that goes to the floor exactly when you need it, which is why a brake fluid flush every two to three years is not upselling.

▸My brake light is on but the brakes feel normal. Is that OK?
It usually means the parking brake is not fully released or the fluid has drifted to MIN as the pads wore. Check both. A firm high pedal and fluid between MIN and MAX means you can drive carefully to a shop. If either check fails, or the pedal changes at all on the way, stop.
▸Can I just top off the brake fluid?
You can, but do it after you have looked at the pads, not instead. If the pads are worn, the level will come back up by itself when they are replaced, and topping off now means overflow later. If the pads are fine, the fluid went somewhere — find the leak.
▸Why are the brake light and the ABS light both on?
Most commonly low fluid or air in the system, which the ABS module also detects and reports. It can also be an ABS module fault serious enough that the module asks the cluster to light the red lamp too. Either way, verify pedal feel and fluid level before deciding whether to drive.
▸Does this light mean my pads are worn out?
Not directly. This lamp does not monitor pad thickness — that is a separate wear indicator on the vehicles that have one. It monitors fluid level, and fluid level falls as pads wear, so worn pads are a common indirect cause. Squealing, grinding or shaking when braking are the direct pad symptoms.
