Intervals move with how you drive, not just how far.

  • Highway commuting, normal service

    50,000–70,000 miles

    Steady speeds and few stops. Pads on a car that mostly does interstate miles often outlast two sets of tires. Rear pads on a rear-drum-equipped car last even longer.

  • City and stop-and-go traffic

    20,000–35,000 miles

    Every stop converts the car's kinetic energy into heat at the pad. Dense urban driving is the harshest realistic duty cycle a passenger car sees, and this is the interval most drivers in Boston, Chicago or San Francisco will actually get.

  • Towing or mountain grades

    15,000–30,000 miles

    Sustained heat glazes pads and warps rotors. Engine braking and a lower gear on long descents extends pad life more than any pad compound choice.

  • Hybrid or EV with regenerative braking

    70,000–100,000+ miles

    Regen does most of the deceleration, so friction pads barely wear. The failure mode flips: rust and seized caliper slide pins from disuse become the reason for service, not thickness. Inspect these annually even though the pads look new.

Signs you are overdue

  • A high-pitched squeal on light braking that disappears when you press harder — that is the wear indicator tab contacting the rotor.
  • Less than 3mm of friction material visible through the wheel spokes above the metal backing plate.
  • Grinding or a metallic scraping sound, which means the pad is gone and the backing plate is machining the rotor.
  • The brake pedal travels noticeably farther before the car slows, or you find yourself pressing harder for the same stop.
  • Shaking under braking or a pull to one side, which usually means uneven pad wear or a sticking caliper.
  • Visible brake dust suddenly much heavier on one wheel than its partner on the same axle.

Doing it yourself

This is the classic first real DIY job, and it is also the one where mistakes have consequences you cannot see until you need the brakes. The specific traps: rear calipers on most cars with an electric parking brake must be retracted with a scan tool that puts the EPB into service mode — winding or pressing the piston back by force destroys the actuator. Compressing a front piston pushes fluid back up the line, so crack the bleeder or watch the reservoir so it does not overflow. Slide pins must be cleaned and regreased with silicone caliper grease, never copper anti-seize, or the caliper binds within a year. Torque the caliper bracket bolts to spec, not to feel — they are frequently 80 ft-lb or more. Bed the new pads in with 6 to 8 moderate stops from 45 mph, and do not hold the pedal at a stop while everything is still hot.

What changes by vehicle

Where the generic advice stops applying.

  • Ford F-150 and Chevrolet Silverado 1500

    Larger rotors, heavier vehicle, and pad sets that cost 40 to 70 percent more than a compact car's. Half-ton trucks used for towing routinely need front pads by 30,000 miles.

  • BMW 3 Series and similar European models

    Most use pad wear sensors that trigger a dash message, and the sensor is a one-time-use part that has to be replaced with the pads. Skipping it leaves a permanent warning on the cluster.

  • Toyota Camry and Honda Civic

    Straightforward floating calipers, inexpensive pads, and rear discs that commonly outlast two front sets. Among the least expensive brake jobs on the road.

  • Vehicles with electric parking brakes

    Common across 2015-and-newer models including the Tucson, later Camrys and most European cars. Service mode is mandatory before retracting the rear pistons, which is what turns a DIY rear brake job into a scan-tool job.

Pads only, or pads and rotors?

Every rotor has a minimum thickness cast or stamped into the hat. If the rotor measures above that figure, has no meaningful thickness variation, and its surface is smooth without a raised lip at the outer edge, new pads on the existing rotor is legitimate and saves real money.

In practice, modern rotors leave the factory close enough to minimum that they are frequently out of spec by the second pad service. A shop that recommends rotors on a 90,000-mile car is usually right. A shop that recommends rotors on a 30,000-mile car with no shudder should be asked for the measured thickness and the minimum spec side by side.

Pad compounds and what they trade away

Pad material is a set of tradeoffs between stopping power, noise, dust and rotor wear. There is no compound that wins on all four, and the factory pad is usually a reasonable compromise for the vehicle it was engineered around.

  • Ceramic — quiet, light-colored dust, easy on rotors, and the default recommendation for a daily-driven car. Less initial bite when cold and less capacity for repeated hard stops.
  • Semi-metallic — stronger bite, better heat capacity, the right choice for towing or a heavy truck. Noisier, dirtier, and it wears rotors faster.
  • Organic (NAO) — softest and quietest, cheapest, wears fastest. Fine for a light car that mostly sees low speeds.
  • Low-metallic NAO — a middle ground with better bite than ceramic at the cost of noticeable noise and dust.

Frequently asked questions

How long can I drive on squealing brakes?
The wear indicator squeals at roughly 3mm, which typically leaves several hundred to a couple thousand miles depending on how you drive. That window closes fast in city traffic. Once the sound becomes a metallic grind, stop scheduling and start driving straight to a shop — every stop from that point is cutting the rotor.
Do brake pads have to be replaced in pairs?
Both sides of the same axle, always. Different friction levels left and right make the car pull under braking, which is a genuine safety issue rather than an upsell. Front and rear axles are independent of each other and do not need to be done at the same time.
Why do my brakes squeal when the pads are new?
Usually missing or dry anti-rattle shims and hardware, or slide pins that were reused without cleaning and grease. Occasionally it is a hard compound that simply resonates against that rotor. A shop that did the job should re-shim it without argument.
Can I replace only the front pads?
Yes, and it is the normal case. Fronts do 70 to 80 percent of the braking work and wear roughly twice as fast, so front-only service is expected. Have the rears inspected at the same time so you know how much life is left back there.
