AC & Heating Problems

Weak cooling, no heat, odors and blower failures.

Air conditioning is a sealed system, so if it is low on refrigerant, it has a leak — topping it off without finding the leak just pays for the same repair twice. Heating problems, by contrast, are usually about coolant flow or a stuck blend door rather than a sealed circuit.

Start by separating airflow problems from temperature problems. Plenty of air at the vents that is not cold is a refrigerant or compressor issue. Cold air but very little of it is a cabin filter or blower issue, and that one is often a twenty-dollar fix.

Common questions

Does an AC recharge fix the problem permanently?
Only if the leak is repaired. A properly sealed AC system does not consume refrigerant, so a system that needed a recharge will need another one. Dye or an electronic sniffer locates the leak, and the repair is usually a seal, hose or condenser.
