What Maintenance Does an EV Actually Need?
No oil, no spark plugs, no exhaust. Tires, brake fluid, cabin filters and coolant — and tires wear faster than you expect.

Note what is missing. No oil change, no filters beyond the cabin, no spark plugs, no belts, no exhaust or emissions work, and no catalytic converter to fail. That absence is the whole story on running costs.
Tires are the real running cost
This is where EV owners get caught out. An EV is typically 15 to 25 percent heavier than the equivalent gas car, delivers full torque from zero, and the tires themselves are often low-rolling-resistance compounds that trade tread life for efficiency. All three shorten tire life.
- Expect 25,000 to 45,000 miles from a set rather than the 45,000 to 60,000 a similar gas sedan might see.
- Rotate on schedule. Skipping rotations on a heavy, torquey car produces uneven wear quickly. See tire rotation.
- Check pressures monthly. Underinflation costs range as well as tread, and the effect is more noticeable than on a gas car.
- Replace with EV-rated tires where the vehicle specifies them. They are built for the load and often include foam liners for noise, which matters more in a quiet cabin.

The brake paradox
Regenerative braking uses the motor to slow the car and recover energy, so the friction brakes do a small fraction of the work they would in a gas car. Pads that last 30,000 miles in a conventional sedan often reach 80,000 to 120,000 in an EV.
The catch is that brakes are designed to be used. Calipers that rarely apply, in a state that salts the roads, can seize on their slide pins and corrode. The rotors themselves develop surface rust that never gets scrubbed off. The result is a brake system that fails from neglect rather than wear.
Have the calipers serviced annually in salt states
Slide pins cleaned and regreased, hardware inspected, rotors checked for pitting. This is an inexpensive job that prevents an expensive one.
Change the brake fluid every two to three years
Brake fluid absorbs moisture from the air regardless of how much you use the brakes. Old fluid corrodes the system from the inside — see brake fluid flush.
Use the friction brakes deliberately now and then
A few firm stops from moderate speed on a dry, empty road scrubs surface rust off the rotors and keeps the pads bedded.
Do not assume long pad life means no attention
Ask for the brakes to be inspected at every tire rotation, even when the pads have obvious material left.
Coolant, software and the 12-volt battery
These are the items owners forget precisely because an EV asks for so little else. Nothing here is expensive, but a neglected 12-volt battery will strand you just as thoroughly as a dead traction pack, and it happens far more often.
- Battery and drive-unit coolant
- EVs run liquid loops for the pack, the motor and often the cabin heat pump. Intervals vary widely — some call for service at four years, others not until well past 100,000 miles. Follow the manual, not a generic schedule.
- 12-volt battery
- Still present, still lasts three to five years, and still the most common cause of an EV that will not wake up. Many EVs use AGM — see AGM vs flooded batteries.
- Software updates
- Real maintenance on a modern EV. Over-the-air updates change charging behavior, thermal management and range estimation. Keep the car current.
- Cabin air filter
- Same job as any car, and more noticeable because the cabin is quiet enough to hear the blower struggling. See cabin air filter replacement.
- Suspension and bushings
- Heavier vehicles are harder on bushings, control arm mounts and wheel bearings. Expect these a little earlier than on a comparable gas car.
Finding someone to work on it
Routine EV work — tires, brakes, alignment, cabin filters, 12-volt battery — is ordinary work that any competent shop can do. High-voltage work is not, and requires specific training and insulated tooling.
- Tires, brakes, suspension, alignment, cabin filters: any independent shop.
- Coolant service on the battery loop, drive unit work, high-voltage diagnostics: dealer or a trained EV specialist only.
- Body work: verify the shop is certified for your brand's structural repair procedures. Battery-adjacent damage has specific requirements.
- Anything involving orange cabling: never a DIY job, and never a shop without documented high-voltage training.
